Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren Bush. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
The most defining moment for me came when I was invited to be a speaker for the national negro women’s council. I gave a presentation on me, my business, and why my business is needed. After I gave the presentation there were multiple questions about my services. But there was one lady who spoke up and said she did not have a question but wanted to let me know that I had struck gold with my business and that she was proud of me. She went on to explain her personal experiences throughout life and how she understood both the background and the foundation of the why behind my business. What she didn’t know is I was at a time when I had started to doubt myself and the impact my business could have. In that moment she not only poured into me but the wisdom she spoke was confirmation for my fitness business and my clothing line that I just launched both geared toward the older adult population. This one moment showed me that you never know who is watching and listening and that as a business owner the focus should be progression and not perfection.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Lauren Bush, and I am a Gerontologist as well as the owner and lead functional training specialist of Time Is Now Health and Fitness LLC. I earned a Master of Science Degree in Gerontology from the University of Indianapolis and Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology form Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. I am an ACE certified Health Coach, Geriatric Fitness Specialist, and Functional Training Specialist. I am also a certified Rock Steady Boxing instructor, where I have gained knowledge and experience with adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. I have a true calling and passsion for the older adult population. I spent years expanding on my knowledge and I a firm believer that age should not impact quality of life. This in-depth knowledge combined with my passion for the Geriatric population has been my driving force in having an impact in the aging population.
Seeing the increase population of older adults and our societies reactive response to growing old, I was able to define the foundation and focus of my business. I am a business focused on providing home-based health and fitness for the older adult population age 60 and over, with a primary focus on functional training and restorative exercise. My business is committed to restoring stability and mobility by improving movement and decreasing muscle imbalance, assists in decreasing fall risk and hospital re-admissions, and increases quality of life, independence, functionality, and continuity of care.
A major aspect of my business is also to encourage older adults to find strength and beauty in growing old. This aspect is the reason why I created Don’t Silence My Wisdom TM clothing brand. While still in the works, this brand was created to tap into the Wisdom of our older adult population and highlight the many benefits of growing old. While society may view growing old as negative, I am determined to change that perspective.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think operating in your purpose and having a relationship with God is most helpful for succeeding in my field and any other field. I was determined to find my why in life and in order to get an answer to that I had to pray for God to show me. I once saw a post that said, the meaning of life is to find your gift and the purpose is to give it away. Once I found my why, I found my purpose and my gift. This made it easier to be successful in my field because I was driven by purpose and love and not financial gain.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most successful strategy for growing clientele has been confidence and leaving my fingerprint on everyone I come in contact with. From doing research, I know there are not many businesses geared toward my target population and functional foundation. As a result, when I speak about my business I speak with confidence that shows my passion and dedication. This allows everyone I come in contact with to remember my name, my personality, and my purpose. Even if it a service they can’t use at the time they are always willing to tell someone else about me. Word of mouth has been my most effective strategy in growing clientele which is why I focus on leaving my fingerprint so they can have something to talk about.
