We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Burke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
I have worked in the restaurant industry as a server and bartender for seventeen years. I learned so much in all of those years, in all of those interactions. I learned how it felt when I was treated like less than human, and how it felt when I went into a space of judgement of the people I was serving. Neither of which felt good. I learned the importance and deep value in listening. In holding the space for people to feel heard and seen. I used to think, “I’m just a server, what does my mundane little interaction with these people mean? I’m not even a blip in their lives.” And what I learned is that small interactions could be deeply impactful. And a little bit of love and listening can make all of the difference.
Lauren , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
PowerHouseHappy started a few years back and the truth is, I’ve been coaching my whole life. How I see coaching is supporting people in first remembering they are born with magic and a mission, connecting to it and then taking the actions to fulfill on it. Whether it’s starting or expanding a business, being more present as a parent, friend or partner, making more money or anything in between, the correct thing for me is probably not the correct thing for you. As a coach, I support folks in quieting down, connecting up and listening in. I also believe deeply in the power of fun. Fun creates an enjoyable and accessible path to so many discoveries.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
In staying in touch with clients I believe using tools that light you up as the marketer is key. I love stationary. I love a hand written letter. I love the idea of someone getting an unexpected card in the mail – and what delight that can bring to their life. I send a lot of cards. It’s not with the goal to market. It’s with the goal to send love and bring some joy – and it happens to be a way to stay connected. I deeply believe staying connected / marketing that feels authentic is always the best route to take!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Money Mindset has been key for me in growing PowerHouseHappy. Growing up love was and still is hugely important value my parents instilled in my sister and I. Love over all. As a kid, our brains are sorting through so much information that sometimes things can get stored in wonky ways. In my sweet little girl brain, the story that was stored was ‘I can either have love or money. A good person will always choose love.’ This story had been living inside of me for a long time and I didn’t even know until I started working with my coach, Erin Anderson. In fact, I think the first time I said it out loud I gasped and covered my mouth. Logically, I knew that was not true and yet the story had lived inside of me for so long that it took a while to untangle and get clear on what I do believe about money and love. It took self inquiry work, the support of my coach and my willingness to be honest with myself and eventually I created a new money story: Money is a tool. Neutral. Simple.
