We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Alright, Lauren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I have taken risks throughout my life, from participating in a volunteer busing program in Chicago during the civil rights movement to starting my own business and law practice.
The busing program involved attending a high school outside of my neighborhood. As a black female, I was a minority in a mostly white school miles from my comfort zone. We faced hostility from the neighborhood, and our parents demanded police protection from gangs. Despite being escorted from classrooms at gunpoint and assaulted, I persevered and graduated with honors!
Starting my own business and practice was a significant risk. Despite being married with a child in middle school, I left a well-paying management position at a county prosecutor’s office to pursue my dream. Building the practice and contributing to household expenses was challenging, especially during financially tight times. However, I remained determined and did not give up.
Surprisingly, my first clients were the parents of children I had prosecuted! They were impressed with the way I treated them and their children during the court proceedings. “You were caring, fair and familiar with the case.” I built the practice and was appointed by a judge to serve as a court commissioner. I enjoyed presiding over post-civil judgment matters and officiating weddings.
Later, I formed a firm with another attorney. We secured contracts with the local school district, the county, and the State Public Defender’s office. These contracts provided a solid financial foundation for the firm. The firm operated for several years before dissolving when we relocated with our families.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Seven years ago, I relocated to a southern city to be closer to family. As a newcomer, I faced the challenge of building a new network and adapting to a different cultural landscape.
Despite initial setbacks in securing part-time teaching positions, I persisted and actively engaged with the local business community. Through networking events, workshops, and business center interactions, I established valuable connections that led to the founding of my own company within a year.
As a business trainer, I’ve been privileged to assist other entrepreneurs and solidify my reputation as a subject matter expert. Leveraging the power of social media, I’ve successfully expanded my brand and influence within the community.
The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to virtual platforms for client meetings and workshops. While I value the in-person connection, I’ve found that virtual interactions offer flexibility and efficiency. I continue to embrace this hybrid approach, combining the best of both worlds.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
Yes. Our company generates revenue through multiple channels. These include the provision of services and the sale of eBooks, books, and other written materials. We are currently developing an online store to offer products tailored to the needs of business owners.
