We recently connected with Lauren Anderson and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
When I first moved to Nashville I had the chance to grab coffee with a songwriter who had been in the business for 30+ years. He told me how tough the business was and shared something he called “the 20 second rule.” He said that when pursuing a passion you’re driven towards, it’s gonna feel like every 20seconds or so that it’s too hard and you’re gonna wanna quit. The key to keeping on going is to know it’s coming and have friends have family in place you can reach out to when times get tough. People who will remind you of what’s in your heart, even when you can’t feel it in the moment. That was the best advice I’ve ever had.
Lauren, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up singing in every choir and every chance I could find. When to undergrad for Opera and got a masters degree in Music Therapy. I worked for years as a music therapist on a Pediatric Unit in Kansas City. While I finished my degree and started my career, I started working towards being a singer/songwriter and artist, which is what I really wanted to do. After years of being a full time therapist and touring on the weekends, I finally decided to move to Nashville and pursue music full time. Now I’ve been in Nashville since 2017, am touring and just released my 3rd full length album last year, which debuted at #12 on the Billboard Blues Charts.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You’re never too old to go after what you love.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2018 I was called up by the tv show, “The Voice” to go audition. I was there for a month to get ready for my audition, then my friends and family flew out to support me as well. But then at the end of the month, the teams filled up before I got a chance to audition. They ended up sending me home without even an audition and after a month of my time and I was devastated. But through it all, I learned that it’s not about not failing, it’s about getting back up when you do.
