We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren and Tyler Stanley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren and Tyler, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
My wife Lauren and I started working out the broad idea behind Terminus Moving back in the summer of 2021, before we even knew we would call the company Terminus Moving. The idea was to start a moving company because I knew plenty of home buyers at that time who were having a tough time finding anyone to help them. I first started doing the basic research on buying trucks and hiring a crew. That path very quickly lead to a lot more research on all of the insurance we would need for this kind of business. What we found out during that process is that it’s hard to find an insurance company that will insure a brand new moving company. Luckily, we were connected with an insurance broker who specializes the moving and transportation industry. That broker also informed us that we would need to get a Household Goods Moving Authority from our state, something we were completely unaware of. So, after a solid year of jumping through hoops to acquire credentials, licenses and insurance, we would ready to book our first move. I began by reaching out to local real estate agents and very quickly we had our first estimate requests coming through the website. Those first few moves were definitely a learning experience and I along with our partner Nick worked every single one for the first three months or so.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My wife Lauren and I own Terminus Moving in Atlanta, Ga. We started the company with the goal of building the very best moving company in Georgia and so far we’re off to a great start. Lauren and I both have backgrounds in real estate. She is a commercial real estate attorney and I am a residential realtor. It’s mostly because of our insight into the real estate market that we noticed an opportunity to grow a successful moving company here. For those who don’t know, Terminus was the informal name of Atlanta back before the city was officially named. Terminus was the end of two major rail lines. We named our company Terminus as a way to stand out as “The” Atlanta Moving Company and honor the history of this great city. Terminus is family-owned and operated and also Veteran Owned.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Terminus Moving has so far been 100% self-funded by Lauren and me. Other than a few business credit cards, we put in all of the start up capital ourselves. We’ve been offered personal loans from family and friends, but so far haven’t taken them up on those offers. We aren’t always able to do the things we would like to do and grow quite as quickly as we would like, but slow and steady is working for now.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Our best source of new clients has come from the relationships we’ve built with local realtors. We sponsor events at real estate offices and reach out to agents we know directly. Those agents continue to refer their clients to us because we do a great job for the client, which makes the agent look like a rockstar for having a hookup with the best moving company in town.
