Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Zucker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The single greatest Challenge to profitability in the area of original music is streaming services like Spotify. Someone is getting rich off of streaming services, and it is not the creators. For example, Spotify pays me .004 cents for every time someone plays one of my songs. The other services are about the same. I would make $20 if someone bought my CD, or $10-15 if they downloaded a digital copy. Without a doubt it is the best time to be heard, the worst time to be paid.
Laura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a singer/songwriter. I have six CDs of original music. I offer songwriting, piano, and guitar lessons. I also do performance coaching and songwriting, workshops, I have written a book about songwriting called “SongC.R.A.F.T- Writing songs in your authentic voice”. The workshops are fun and guide participants to connect with the authentic voice that already lives within them. And finally, I own Milestone Music, a service to write custom songs for special occasions.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I used to be a lawyer. I was 46 when I embarked on a life in music. I had just moved from the East Coast to the West Coast, and almost immediately became the ingle parent of three small children. it was not really an option for me to take a new bar exam and be a full-time lawyer, and still be available to my children, so I created a life in which my work could be done in a flexible way, and I could be an attentive parent.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I spent years honing my craft, and have won many awards and accolades in the process. Being really good at what I do means that people who see one of my shows, or take a lesson with me, will recommend me to people that they know. While I wouldn’t wish to live through another pandemic, it did create a model for me in which I can offer lessons on Zoom, vastly increasing my businesses’ reach
