We were lucky to catch up with Laura Wong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I want to leave behind things that support and inspire my future and fellow Witches and magical practitioners. Whether that’s a pin that makes then laugh, a podcast episode that makes them feel a little less alone, or a book they can pass on. I was put on this earth to support others who are called to live a magical life, and to educate others about it’s realities.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Laura Wong, and like a true entrepreneur- I have a few jobs. I’m the CEO and Founder of Lady Moon Co., Inc. a brand that creates products for Witches, and those living a magic lifestyle. I am also the co-founder of Little Cauldron Books and the co-host of the Third Eye Bind Podcast.
I have a background in performing arts. I am a clasically trained actor, dancer, and singer. I got married and moved to Los Angeles in 2011 to persue an acting career. 6 years laters, I decided that was no longer something I wanted to do professionally, and with the encouragement of my husband, started Lady Moon Co. by releasing a few lapel pin designs. After feeling really disillusioned by the acting world, I knew whatever I did it needed to be something I loved. As a lifelong magical practitioner, I started designing things I wasn’t seeing offered in the occult apparel and accessories world.
There are millions of people who practice magic, and I’ve been lucky enough to find a group of them who love what I make. It’s been a dream, from zero expectations to becoming my full time job.
I’m the most proud that I’m still in business. Times are tough, I have seen so many wonderful shops go under the past few years. Witch shops are all the rage, but I believe people can feel the authenticity we have to offer. I do this not only to make fun things, but to further the acceptance of magical lifestyles.
I’ve been designing more tools, like tarot and oracle decks, but my proudest acheivement is our Traveling Spell Spaces, which are blankets/towels that are designed as a dual purpose ritual space on the go.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
As an online only business, I use several ecommerce platforms. When I started Lady Moon Co., I opened both an Etsy and a Shopify store, and honestly it has saved me many a time. I consider Shopify our main hub, because to features, customer service, is way more customizable and visually appealing. There’s more freedom. Etsy though, I consider like a brick and mortar for constant foot traffic. It’s consistent income. At one point I considered shutting it down nad just using Shopify, because before inventory syncing tools it was a logistical nightmare, but I’m so glad I didn’t. Etsy has become so much more seller friendly in the past few years, even if the free shipping incentives and shop goals feel a bit oppressive for a small business. Right now, I’m grateful for it!
Another platform I have to mention is Faire. It’s a wholesale Etsy basically, and for us it’s been consistent revenue. It’s a super easy way to get your products into the hands of like minded shop owners. As a niche brand, I’ve done very well finding witch shops that keep re-ordering from us. It’s a great passive marketing tool if you have a large catalog of products. Cannot reccomend enough.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honestly and selfishly, it’s making the things I want. It’s really easy to forget as a business owner that you are also a consumer, and that means putting yourself in that headspace. It’s a combination of having inherently good taste as a designer, but also knowing your audience. I think because of my performing arts background, I know how to relate and connect with people, and that makes all the difference when you are marketing. It’s the thought I go back to when I am stuck or uninspired-what would I want to hear? How would this make me feel?
