We were lucky to catch up with Laura Volpe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
With a passion for hair aesthetics rooted in a career as a Goldwell Master Colorist in a Hair Salon spanning over 15 years I’d say my defining moment was when I realized I finally found a proven, effective Hair Loss Solution to offer women who suffer from Hair Loss. This Non Surgical Hair Loss Procedure is called Scalp Micropigmentation. Once I learned of this procedure, I just knew this was my new path.
Scalp Micropigmentation is a procedure that gives the look and illusion of fuller thicker hair filling in the sparse areas of concern with micro-pigmented “dots”. The color is matched to the clients hair, eye and skin color.
Driven by the belief that everyone deserves to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin, is the reason I committed myself to helping clients reclaim their confidence.
Laura, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Being behind the chair for so many years, I was only able to offer temporary solutions for my clients who suffered from hair loss/hair thinning whether it be hair fibers, hair extensions, products and/or vitamins. These were all good and great, but they were only temporary solutions. Hair fibers are problematic because they clog the hair follicle therefore stifling any growth and are so messy to apply. Hair extensions require maintenance and are costly, still not able to addressing the thinning/sparse area on top of the scalp.
Once learning of Scalp Micropigmentation, I eagerly pivoted towards this revolutionary Non Surgical Hair Loss Industry, which offers a transformative solution that is cost effective, non invasive and offers immediate results.
Being a hairdresser/colorist for over 15+ years puts me at a great advantage because I have gained a deep, multifaceted understanding of the hair/ scalp. I also developed an extensive understanding of color theory, crucial when performing SMP treatments to ensure a realistic, seamless blend with the existing hair.
I am also an effective communicator and empathetic listener. This skillset has been invaluable in my SMP practice as it’s essential to understand a client’s concerns, expectations, and ultimate goals to deliver satisfactory results.
Hair loss/ alopecia/thinning can have a profound emotional and psychological effects on anyone, but it often hits women especially hard due to societal pressures and expectations surrounding women and hair. The hair is more than just hair to us women, it is seen as a sign of beauty, femininity, and health, and so losing it can cause a significant blow to a woman’s self-esteem and self-image.
I am driven by a belief that everyone deserves to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin, and I am committed to helping clients reclaim this through comprehensive and personalized hair and scalp treatments. This commitment to excellence, paired with a deep understanding of the emotional and psychological impacts of hair loss, makes me a much sought-after expert in the field. With a proven track record of transforming lives through innovative hair solutions, I continue to change the narrative around hair loss and scalp health.
In essence what ultimately sets me apart from others is that I am also a studying student of Trichology, the branch of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp. This tri-pronged approach to hair care enables me to provide clients with nuanced and highly effective treatments that address both cosmetic concerns and underlying health conditions. So when my clients come to me, they are getting the most knowledgeable information out there with a trained and skilled professional whose background goes layers deep. From consultation, to the execution of the “Hair Protocol” I prescribe, I am committed to helping you.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
After being trained in NYC with the best Scalp Micropigmentation Institute, I didn’t realize the stipulations Suffolk County had in place for the field of Scalp Micropigmentation. Not only did I have additional tests to take, I had to complete an Apprenticeship Program. The real disappointment was when I found out I was not able to offer this service in my salon. There are rules and regulations that need to be in place and the salon environment was not set up to accommodate this type of service. I felt defeated, like “what do I do know”? I spent 6 months fulfilling the requirements of Suffolk County but still had no place to work. I felt like giving up, because it seemed impossible. But I had to remember my “why” and that’s where my resilience kicked in. I had to make a big decision and I had three options; 1)forget Scalp Micropigmentation and stay in my lane in the salon, 2)work two jobs never really being present with one or 3)pursue a passion of helping women who suffer from hair loss.
It’s been two years now since I made my decision to pursue SMP full time and I couldn’t be happier with my decision.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I know my reputation is built on trust, honesty and a plethora of knowledge. When someone is suffering from hairloss, it is devastating. So finding someone you can trust who is honest with you and can offer multiple treatment options is invaluable to them. Knowing that every single persons needs are different therefore I offer a unique and personalized treatment plan that goes far beyond the practice. I help them with everything from salon appointments all the way to tips and tricks on blow drying their hair. I am their go to hair person.
