Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Verónica Hermosillo Balderrama . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura Verónica , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea came to life during one of the most difficult times in my life. I arrived in Santa Fe with my childrens and almost no belongings. The only thing I had was my hands and my knowledge of sewing. I started offering small alterations, and little by little that need turned into a business: Alterations & More, which is now recognized in the community
Laura Verónica , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Laura Hermosillo, founder and president of Alterations & More Inc., a sewing workshop established in Santa Fe in 2008. My business was born during a time of personal hardship, but over the years it has grown into a company recognized for its quality and service to the community.
At Alterations & More we offer alterations, embroidery, and garment personalization, as well as a space where clients can also find carefully selected jewelry and handbags. What sets us apart is our personal touch, attention to detail, and the ability to transform every piece into something unique.
I am proud to have built this business from the ground up and to have received awards such as “Woman-Owned Business of the Year” and “Family-Friendly Business,” which validate our hard work. What I want people to know most about our brand is that it is built on resilience, creativity, and a true passion for serving others.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There were moments when I thought I wouldn’t be able to keep the workshop open, especially in the early years and during the pandemic. I remember nights when I wasn’t sure I could cover even the basic expenses, but I chose to keep working, innovating, and finding ways to serve my customers. That perseverance saved me from closing down and taught me that every crisis is also an opportunity.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The most important lesson I had to unlearn was believing that asking for help meant weakness. When I first started, I thought I had to do everything by myself: sewing, customer service, purchasing, accounting. Over time, I realized that mindset was holding me back. I learned that delegating, collaborating, and accepting support didn’t make me less capable—it made me stronger. Thanks to that, I was able to grow my business, focus on what I do best, and create opportunities for others.
