We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Velasquez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I have always considered myself an amateur photographer. Ever since I was little, I enjoyed taking photos and was fascinated by the developing process. During my university years, some classes prepared me to pursue this craft. At the age of 20, I started getting involved in photography and video-related jobs and worked as a freelancer for four years. Later on, I joined the public sector where I had the opportunity to publish in magazines and newspapers. However, as time went by, other job opportunities arose, leading me down a different path, and photography became more of a hobby for six years until my family and I migrated to Minnesota. Arriving here and starting from scratch presented us with various challenges, and I must confess that taking photos became a therapy, something that lifted me out of the routine of work.
My state of mind wasn’t the best; I wanted a change. Waking up to go to work had become a mental and physical burden, and the hours were exhausting.
Then, one evening, after coming home from work, I received a call. It was someone who was interested in my resume, and although we didn’t reach an agreement in terms of employment, she invited me to a women’s meeting, which I attended.
That’s when my story began. Several of the attendees at the meeting put their trust in me and started contacting me for various types of photoshoots, including family portraits, advertising photography, and senior portraits.
Like any journey, it hasn’t been easy, but so far, I can tell you that there’s nothing like doing what you love and are passionate about. I feel happy and fortunate because of it.
Laura, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

“Although it’s something I need to research more, I believe that any technology that allows for both the commercialization and protection of the authenticity of digital art is positive. However, I still have doubts about the market positioning of emerging artists.”
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I believe that every creative process involves moments of resilience. In the case of photography, for example, when focusing on wildlife, I encounter days where the weather, lighting, and overall environment are not favorable for capturing any images. There are also times when I have the perfect photo right in front of me, but for reasons of focus, lighting or distance I cannot get the desired image. Regardless of what happens and even if I don’t get the material I expected or wanted, what I do know is that I enjoy being present in those moments. I take a deep breath, move and connect with my surroundings…
