We recently connected with Laura Syren and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
As a retiree I started late in life, I bring a wealth of life and experiences and a fresh outlook to my artwork. I use my art differently in the industry by infusing it with a sense of wisdom, resilience and a deep understanding of human experiences. I think this sets me apart and offers a distinctive voice in the art world, inspiring others to pursue their passions and express themselves creatively, regardless of their stage in life.
My artwork evokes a sense of liveliness and vibrancy, with its colorful and playful nature. The conversational aspect suggests that it sparks interaction and dialogue, drawing viewers into its world. The representation of plants and still life adds a sense of natural beauty and tranquility, while the playful elements infuse a sense of joy and whimsy. The reference to Matisse indicates a connection to my expressive and bold use of color and form, suggesting a dynamic and engaging visual experience.
Laura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey in the art world began with a rich foundation of creativity and a deep appreciation for art. As a retired designer of cabinets, I was already immersed in the world of creativity and design. My frequent visits to art museums and participation in art classes, including printmaking, provided me with a diverse and well-rounded artistic education. My creative spirit extended beyond my professional work, as evidenced by my ventures into making lampshades and illustrating homes and buildings, showcasing my passion for creating art in various forms.
What sets my journey apart is my genuine joy in bringing meaning and excitement to my customers through my art. The satisfaction of knowing that my work resonates with others and finds a place in their homes adds a deeply fulfilling dimension to my artistic endeavors. Furthermore, my desire to inspire and support other artists in their creative pursuits demonstrates my generous spirit and commitment to fostering a vibrant artistic community. My journey in the art world is characterized by a lifelong dedication to creativity, a passion for sharing meaningful art with others, and a genuine desire to uplift and inspire fellow artists.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to inspire others through my work. My art has the power to evoke emotions, spark creativity, and ignite passion in those who experience it. Knowing that my creations have the potential to inspire and uplift others can be incredibly fulfilling and can create a meaningful impact in the lives of those who encounter my art.
Additionally, the freedom to have fun and enjoy myself while creating art is a deeply rewarding aspect of being an artist. The creative process allows for self-expression, exploration, and the opportunity to immerse myself in activities that bring joy and fulfillment. This sense of enjoyment and fulfillment can be a source of great satisfaction and can contribute to a sense of overall well-being.
Moreover, the freedom to schedule myself and work at my own pace adds another layer of reward to being an artist. This autonomy allows me to structure my work in a way that aligns with your personal preferences and rhythms, fostering a sense of independence and control over my creative pursuits.
In summary, the most rewarding aspects of being an artist include the ability to inspire others, the freedom to have fun and enjoy the creative process, and the autonomy to schedule myself in a way that best suits my individual needs and preferences.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Leading up to becoming a full-time artist, I had to unlearn the lesson of doubting my ability to make it work and the negative influence of others who may have discouraged me from pursuing art as a full-time career. Overcoming the lack of confidence in my ability to succeed as a professional artist required unlearning self-doubt and embracing a mindset of belief in my creative talents and potential.
Additionally, disregarding the discouraging words of others who may have suggested that art should remain a hobby rather than a career path was a crucial lesson to unlearn. This involved rejecting external negativity and instead embracing my passion for art as a legitimate and fulfilling vocation.
By unlearning these limiting beliefs and external influences, I was able to pave the way for a successful transition to becoming a full-time artist, allowing myself confidence and passion for art to guide my journey. This process of unlearning has empowered me to pursue my artistic aspirations with determination and conviction, ultimately leading to a fulfilling and rewarding career as an artist.
