We were lucky to catch up with Laura Sinclair recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
When I became a mom and an entrepreneur, I quickly realized how lonely it could be. Those first few years postpartum were some of the hardest in my life—not just because of the sleepless nights or figuring out how to be a good mom, but because I felt like no one really understood what I was going through. I was trying to grow a business, navigate motherhood, and somehow still find a version of myself in the middle of it all. It was overwhelming in a way I can’t even fully describe.
What made it worse was that I kept looking for support and resources, and I couldn’t find anything that really spoke to the unique challenges of being a mom and an entrepreneur. So, I did what a lot of us do. I invested in courses and coaching programs that promised the world, but none of it felt tailored to my reality. I spent a lot of money on advice that didn’t fit the season of life I was in.
I’d sit through sessions thinking, “That’s great for someone with endless hours or no kids, but how do I make this work when I barely have time to shower?” It was frustrating, and honestly, it left me feeling more isolated and discouraged.
That’s when I knew I had to create something different—because I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. I needed it, and I knew other moms in business needed it, too. It wasn’t just about strategies or advice; it was about creating a space where women could feel seen and supported in the realities of their lives. It was about building something that didn’t just help women grow their businesses but helped them do it in a way that aligned with their values, their families, and their own well-being.
What makes this work so worthwhile to me is the impact. I know what it feels like to feel stuck, alone, and like you’re not enough—at home or in business. If I can help another woman move through that and step into a life and business that feels fulfilling and sustainable, that’s everything to me. I created the support I wish I had, and seeing how it changes lives fuels me every day.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Laura Sinclair—a strategic business mentor, marketing expert, and founder of This Mother Means Business. I specialize in helping early-stage female entrepreneurs, especially moms, build profitable and fulfilling businesses without sacrificing their personal lives or well-being.
How I Got Here:
My journey into this work came from a place of necessity. Years ago, I owned a micro gym in Bradford, Ontario and was juggling all the things—running a business, raising a family, and trying not to lose myself in the chaos. But I found myself burnt out, overwhelmed, and missing moments with my family that I could never get back. I was stuck in the grind, trying to do it all, and it felt like I was failing on every front. I knew there had to be a better way.
When I looked for support, I realized there wasn’t much out there for women like me—moms building businesses while raising kids. I poured money into advice and programs that didn’t account for the realities of motherhood and entrepreneurship, and I kept thinking, “Why isn’t anyone talking about this?” That frustration became my fuel. I knew I could create a space where women didn’t have to choose between their ambitions and their families.
What I Do:
I work with entrepreneurial mothers to help them gain clarity, confidence, and joy in their businesses. I have a podcast called This Mother Means Business where I interview incredible entrepreneurial moms and provide strategy and advice for moms building businesses. This Mother Means Business also offers a community, a mastermind, retreats, and events. My approach is holistic—it’s not just about growing a business but about doing it in a way that works for your life. We focus on things like:
Mastering time and energy to avoid burnout.
Building a clear, aligned brand vision.
Creating irresistible offers.
Developing marketing strategies that attract clients without constant hustle.
Enhancing customer experience to build loyalty and referrals.
I also help my clients set boundaries—both in their businesses and personal lives—because too many women are over-delivering without being fairly compensated or taking care of themselves.
What makes my approach unique is that I deeply understand what it’s like to be in the trenches. I’ve been where my clients are—juggling pickups and deadlines, feeling like there’s never enough time, and wondering if I was doing enough. My focus isn’t just on business strategies; it’s on creating a sustainable, values-aligned approach that supports you as a person, not just a business owner. My work is driven by my belief that a successful business should never come at the expense of your health, happiness, or family.
The thing I’m most proud of is the ripple effect of my work. When a woman transforms her business and her life, it doesn’t just stop with her. Her family feels it, her clients feel it, and her community feels it. I’ve supported hundreds of women in scaling their businesses, breaking through limiting beliefs, and creating lives they’re excited to live. Watching their transformations is what keeps me going.
I’m here to show you that you can have both—a thriving business and a joyful life. It’s not about finding “balance” (a word I don’t really believe in); it’s about integration, alignment, and building a business that works for you. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or like you’re constantly trading one part of your life for another, know that there’s another way—and I’m here to help you find it.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was that success comes from doing more. For a long time, I equated working harder and longer hours with being successful. I thought that if I wasn’t constantly hustling, I wasn’t doing enough, and my business would fall apart. It was this deeply ingrained belief that the only way to grow was to sacrifice—whether that meant my time, energy, or personal life.
The backstory? It all came to a head when I owned my gym. From the outside, it looked like I had it all together—a thriving business, happy clients, and growth year over year. But behind the scenes, I was putting myself last, working on weekends, and spending late nights at the gym, feeling like I couldn’t stop or everything would collapse. I was running myself into the ground, but I told myself that was just the price of success.
Then one day I looked at my daughter and realized I was building this business to give her a better life, yet I was missing so much of hers. That was my wake-up call. I had to confront the hard truth: this version of success wasn’t sustainable, and it wasn’t what I truly wanted.
Unlearning this belief wasn’t easy. It meant shifting how I worked, letting go of perfectionism, and setting boundaries—not just with clients, but with myself. I started asking, What would this look like if it were easy? What would this look like if it were fun? and focused on doing the right things instead of all the things. I learned to prioritize systems, delegation, and time for myself—things I used to see as luxuries but now understand are essential.
The biggest shift came when I realized that my value as a business owner and mentor isn’t tied to how busy I am. Success doesn’t come from doing more; it comes from doing what matters most. And now, that’s something I help my clients unlearn too. Because when we let go of the hustle-for-hustle’s-sake mentality, we create space for the kind of success that doesn’t just look good—it feels good too.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my audience on social media wasn’t a straight path—it was a mix of trial, error, and leaning into authenticity. When I first started, I was trying to do what I thought I should do: post perfectly curated content, follow trends, and play by all the “rules” social media experts were teaching. But I quickly realized that while I was creating content, I wasn’t actually connecting with anyone. It felt robotic, and it showed.
The real shift happened when I started showing up as myself. I got vulnerable, shared my story, and talked about the real, messy parts of being a mom and an entrepreneur—the things I was learning, the challenges I was navigating, and the moments of joy I was finding along the way. I wasn’t trying to be perfect anymore; I was just being honest. That’s when my audience started growing—not just in numbers, but in engagement and connection.
I learned that people aren’t on social media for perfectly polished posts. They’re there for connection, for someone who makes them feel seen, understood, and inspired. So, I focused on providing value—teaching what I knew, sharing insights, and opening up conversations about the things my audience was struggling with. I prioritized consistency, not just in how often I posted but in how I showed up.
For me, building my audience wasn’t just about growing numbers—it was about finding my people. It’s that connection, that sense of community, that has been the most rewarding part of the journey. Remember, people follow you because of who you are, not because of who you think they want you to be. Show up as yourself, and the right audience will find you.
