Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Schreiber.
Hi Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Oh wow, this can be very short or very long, depending on which version you want! The short version is lots and lots of training, study and hard work! Determination and refusal to give up until I was booking work with my bucket list clients got my here. The long version is that it is a journey that started when I was a young student at Barnard College, Columbia University. I certainly had a distinctive voice and often when my sister and I would go out to eat in NYC, the waiters and waitresses who were also actors would say that I should go into voice over. That was in the mid-1990s! At the time, I looked into making a demo “tape” but VOs back then were still showing up in person for casting calls and at that time is seemed that being a student at Columbia and a career in voice over were mutually exclusive. But, I never forgot about it and neither did my husband. We talked about it for years, half joking, “maybe some day when I do voice over…”
Years later I was seated at a party next to a talented narrator named Marie Hoffman. She as telling me about her work. At the time a lot of it was in eLearning and Audiobooks. I had one of those “if she can do it, what am I waiting for?” moments. Marie was kind enough to talk to me at length after that party and tell me everything I might need to get going, about finding a coach and the basics of building a studio. I really owe my start to her and will be forever thankful for the time she spent.
After that call, I began months of research, started working with coaches, and started building my booth, started tech training, all of it. That is how I built my foundation to get where I am today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think, as a working my mom, there are always challenges. First of all, voice over is extremely competitive. While I had several agents within a month of launching my website, booking is a very different thing. Once I started booking my trajectory was different. But life happens. Sometimes my kids’ schedule would disrupt my workflow. I also developed IBD in 2023 and that was really, really hard. For the first time in my career I had to email clients and put work on hold.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think I’m known for a few things that I’m super proud of. First, I’ve won the One Voice Award and have been SOVAS nominated for my Radio Imaging work. The work that one was for an Adult Hits station and I actually wrote all the content to, so that was extremely meaningful.
I think I’m also well-known for my commercial work. I’ve booked multiple national spots, many have been for casino brands. I tend to book this sort of work because I have a fairly large vocal range. While my natural range is 17-22, I can sound like a kid or like a middle-aged mom. I’ve worked with brands including Dove, Gap, JP Morgan, Jet Blue, Smirnoff, NJ Lotto, Walmart and more!
I also coach and speak at a lot of the VO conferences which is very meaningful to me.
What matters most to you?
Two things matter most to me: client service and quality audio. Building meaningful, lasting relationships with the people I work with is everything. For example, just this morning a client I have done IVR for the last five years for a national chain sent me more prompts. This on-going work, that we can count on each other, matters. And a large part of it is the pristine quality of the audio that I deliver. Getting to know the clients and offering a sound product they can depend on is what my business is built on.
