Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Salcido. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I’ve always believed that things happen in their due time. Do I wish that I would have started sooner? ABSOLUTELY. I’ve loved art and drawing for as long as I can remember. I did it never thinking of it as a career or business since I was made to think it is not a “real job”. I started to actually dive in 5-6 years ago around 2017, only selling small drawings here and there. I know if I would have kept going when I first got the itch (2006) I would have been so much more ahead of the game in both my art, murals and apparel. My mind unfortunately wasn’t in the right place.
Now in present time, it’s been nonstop and has grown so much for me. To which I’m super grateful and excited for the future.
Laura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a mother, wife and business owner. Living in the sunny Coachella Valley. I work with many mediums or art, everything from pen/ pencil to canvas and digital art. I have a apparel line called Sweet Sukar, Sukar being my nickname and sweet because I feel I’m just that 😄 my art is inspired by Chicano Art and graffiti, two things I grew up on, love and respect.
The are different products I sell, mostly apparel and art but I also take on mural work and do digital designs for other businesses.
I can really say I’m Proud of myself, the odds have been against me plenty of times, it’s been discouraging and stressful at others, but I love doing what I do too much to let it go. The pros always overweight the cons and the cons are always temporary. Waking up and having my own schedule and bit of freedom really makes things worth it.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I worked a 9-5 job, full time and always busy. There were no loans, no capital no credit. When I moved up in rank I started getting bonuses. That extra money was then invested into my top item I own, my iPad. I don’t think anything would have gotten me further into apparel and designs if I wouldn’t have invested in getting something that would help me create so much. Once I began creating designs for others that money was invested in other software and machines to create even more items.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Everything I’ve posted and shown to my audience is Me. There is no sugarcoating no “doing it for the gram” for clout or any of that. I show everyone what I love as an artist, what I grew up on, being positive, and helping others with letting them know we are capable of achieving anything we work for. It really is just about being yourself, being true to without you are and what you love. Everything else always follows.
