We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Owen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Hi Laura, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
According to the CDC, about 90% of our healthcare expenditure goes to pay for chronic illnesses that are preventable (diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, autoimmune diseases, many cancers, etc.. This means we have many premature deaths, unnecessary suffering, and massive expense. Like anyone, I have lost family members and friends to these horrible diseases and have watched many people suffer. Furthermore, 72% of Americans are overweight or obese. 42% are clinically obese, and this number is projected to jump to 50% in 6 years. This will explode the chronic illnesses.
It hit me that we must stop this crazy train.
I founded HealthyID to transform lives by helping to transform people’s health. We are a digital healthcare solutions company that provides tools to help people better manage their health from home. We offer a clinical weight loss program that prioritizes healthy weight loss. We also offer at-home health tests to provide privacy and convenience. Our board-certified physicians provide telehealth services, and we delivery medications for certain health and wellness conditions (sexual health, skincare and hair loss).
We will launch in March 2024.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a serial entrepreneur. The last company that I co-founded was a tech company that we took public. I I served in public office, as Secretary of Commerce in Kansas. I founded a global telehealth company many years ago that was very exciting but failed as it was far ahead of its time. This failure led to a tremendous opportunity to serve as an advisor to a foreign Minister of Health. I have had the opportunity to work in several industries but preventive healthcare has always been my personal passion.
I believe that people sometimes simply need someone to believe in them, and provide them with tools to overcome the challenges associated with weight loss. In addition to the weight loss medications (for those who qualify), we have a science-backed weight loss program, education and lots of inspiration by Coaches that are Registered Dietitians, trained in behavior modification – with an extra dose of care and compassion. That is what HealthyID brings to people who are ready to lose the excess weight.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
I co-founded a company that designed the first digital dashcams (for law enforcement). It was a great success. We brought cutting edge tech to our first responders, and sold those units all across the US and around the world. We took the company public. It was a lot of fun. Then the crash of 2008 happened. The first thing federal, state and local governments cut when there is an economic collapse is capital budgets. We had cash on hand, but the months turned into years. The investment bank we had worked with for years had committed to raise capital for us, to help us recover but they went under along with so many other investment banks at that time. We were forced to sell the company. This was a massive loss for my family and it was also devastating for so many of our great employees and their families – many of which had worked with us for years.
I was fortunate to serve in several roles after this, including serving as interim CEO of a global consulting company, and as advisor to a foreign Minister of Health. These were tremendous roles for which I am grateful but I felt incomplete.
Healthcare is my passion, and I love being an entrepreneur. So HealthyID was born.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Big Pharma. Big healthcare. Health insurance. The processed food Industry. The fast food industry. What do they have in common? They are big business that are driven exclusively by big profits.
They lack compassion. They lack personal care. They lack understanding for the individual consumer.
HealthyID is everything they are not.
We have compassion. We care – on a very deep level. Our vision is all about the needs to care for the consumer, as individuals.
