We were lucky to catch up with Laura Nevins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
The most important thing I keep in mind, is that you can’t rush a process. Learning herbs and energy work takes dedication, you can’t fast track it. One of my early instructors said that she had studied herbs for at least ten years before she felt like she had the right to call herself an herbalist, and she was absolutely right, you have to take the time. You can learn to varying degrees and be proficient in your own kitchen, but when people come to you and are trusting you to be knowledgeable that comes with great responsibility, and I take that very seriously. It’s not in my nature to rush through anyway, I love being immersed in study. When I was learning Usui Reiki I started with level 1 and sat with it, practicing and experiencing it for almost a year before I took level 2. That process changed my life. Sure you can find places where you can take all levels of Reiki in a weekend, but I don’t get that, I feel like I would’ve missed so much inner work and clarity. I’m a slow boat for the long haul kind of person.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
It’s been an interesting evolution from where I started and where I currently am. I didn’t start with a solid plan, I just followed what I love and eventually all of the threads started to weave together to form a solid foundation of cohesive skills and practices that I could utilize to help others. My jumping off point to dedicate myself to this work full time however came when my husband and I sold our brick and mortar business a few years ago.
I’ve been a plant person and gardener all my life, with a special place in my heart for herbs. I’ve spent the last decade studying herbs and herbal medicine making, and have had the good fortune to learn from many remarkable and generous herbalists and teachers. When I first started to learn about plants, maybe became obsessed with is more accurate, I was fascinated with their beauty and relationship to all living creatures. But when I was introduced to their medicine, the world opened up to me in a very different and exciting way. And when I learned of their amazing ability to heal on a spiritual and emotional level as well, the possibilities seemed infinite.
The progression to learning about Reiki was natural, I was a tree hugger from an early age. As a child I was keenly aware of the flow of energy, but I didn’t know it to be “energy”, I felt it as love. My sister Jennifer, a brilliant Psychic and Animal Communicator, was introduced to Reiki through her work with horses, and she encouraged me to pursue it. It changed my life and not only strengthened my connection to the universal energy we are all part of, but gave me the language to express it and the tools to be able to help others.
Intuitive Tarot was the surprise for me, but it has become cherished work, and the three modalities together create wonderful harmony. Tarot is fascinating as it encompasses, among many things, plant medicine, astrology, the elements and the Tree of Life. It’s a powerful tool for reflection, inspiration, self-discovery and clarity.
I work with a wide variety of people who come to me for different reasons. Some are recovering from illness, injuries or surgeries, some are experiencing depression or emotional trauma, and some are exhausted and overwhelmed. There are also clients who feel lost or trapped in the life they’re living, as well as some who just need a supportive boost and moment of self care. Whatever the needs are, I provide a peaceful, safe and restorative space where we work together.
I enjoy getting to know my clients and learning what it is that they need to feel seen and cared for. Most people do not realize the beauty and healing they already possess, and the work that I do not only provides support and insight but helps them to tap into what already lies within them. When a client leaves a session feeling lighter, more confident or inspired, it inspires me. When I am able to help someone through their process it is one of the best feelings there is.
I love what I do, it’s all energy, Herbs, Reiki and Tarot, and having the opportunity to share this work with others is a joy and an honor, and I’m ever inspired by the journeys people share with me.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Showing up with integrity and doing the very best job I can. The growth of my clientele is attributed to word of mouth. Even when we had our brick and mortar business, it didn’t matter how many ads we took out in magazines, donations we made to local events or social media outreach, it all boiled down to taking care of our customers and those kind folks telling their friends. When you’re truly grateful for every person that gives you an opportunity and you do all you can to give them the best experience possible it matters and makes a difference.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Keeping my head down, trusting myself and not worrying about what anyone else is doing. A sweet friend who recently passed away said to me once …comparison is the thief of beauty… and it’s key.
