Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Minero. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
When I first transferred to cal state Fullerton during my undergrad, I failed most of my first exams. I was already nervous and questioning if I belonged because of the stigma I internalized coming from community college. I had a sociology professor who I asked help from say to me that I was never going to be a scientist and I needed to go back to my farming town where I belonged because all I was going to be my whole life was a farmer. I broke down and pondered if she was right even though there was so much that was wrong about her statement that I didnt know at the time. But the person I called was my mom, and she told me that I belonged, and that I was going to get back up and show her that. Several years later, I became a doctor, trained at the number one institution in my field and even completed a super prestigious and competitive fellowship at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine as a young scientist even before I was conferred my PhD. This taught me the importance of surrounding yourself by the right people, the ones that believe in you, specially when its hard to believe in yourself.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had trained to become a tenured professor and researcher at top institutions and also wanted to be in policy work, I am doing none of the above. At first it was ridiculously scary and now, I truly understand, that this is what I meant to do and would love to share more about that story. I never thought I’d become a business owner right out of training for 14 years straight. I didn’t know Id work for myself and I couldnt be happier.

Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
Going with the theme above, Id like to talk about how circumsntaces some what pushed me to become a business owner and how I had to take a chance on myself. The path to learning how to own and run a business has been a hard one and ongoing but a challenge Id chose again and again because my work and what I do is my life’s passion and mostly doesn’t feel like work. I want to inspire others to push past their doubts to do the same.
