We recently connected with Laura McCauley and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, thanks for joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
With every order that is prepared I make a hand written Thank You note as a part of how I appreciate that they took time to think of my small little business. If I get a huge order in I will always make a little something extra or take of a percentage for my client.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My Name is Laura McCauley. I am a 29 year old, full-time mom and wife. I also work fulltime in Healthcare.
When I was younger I wanted to learn to crochet with my grandma. I picked up a little bit but never continued. When I was 22 I tired again and did not like it. Then Again at 25 it stuck. I just picked up the habit and never looked back. I started out with headbands, hats and blankets. I then worked my way up to crop tops, amigurumi (stuffed animals/characters). I am currently looking to add candles to our list of items. I am working on a few things now. I am looking into the future for my little business. We are in the works of making clothes. Lots trials at this point.
I think homemade things always set them selves apart from a lot of other companies. Who doesn’t love a good home made sweater. scarf. hat etc.
I am very proud that I have been able to manage my time to make my small business work. I do not get a lot of commission work. So I just make things and sell them at flea markets and such. I am proud that I had an idea and went with it not knowing if it would take off or not.
I am so very thankful for the small clientele I do work with.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I did what everyone else did. I set up a small page on Facebook and Instagram. I just made a few post with some extremely popular hashtags.
I try to gear my creations as a part of what is going on in the world.
Sometimes its seasonal, sometimes its silly and sometimes its stuff I saw and thought it was cute so I made it!
Then I started to gear my audience towards things I liked and what was cute and it seems that my social media has picked up a little bit.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I am going to give this one to my family and friends! If it was not for them constantly sharing my things and putting my name out there. I feel that I would not have the amount of support that I do now.
My Facebook page has been growing these last few weeks and it’s mind blowing !
