We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Langfitt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
When I first started Unbridled Biz, I constantly looked outside of myself for guidance like a lost puppy. It was a habit drilled into me all my life – parents, teachers, coaches, and bosses tell you what they expect. You respond. They let you know if something needs to change. Sound familiar?
Becoming my own boss shook me awake. Until that point I had been living on autopilot, following the plans that society had for me. I’ve always been a fiercely independent spirit (sorry Mom), but I’d only toed the line until the day I started Unbridled Biz. My subconscious was not ready for the storm. It panicked. “How do we know what to do?” “How do we know if we’re doing a good job?!”
I spent tens of thousands of dollars on coaching and courses, desperately seeking the guidance my system was accustomed to. But you know what I learned? The answers were inside me all along. This seems so simple and obvious, but living that belief is a whole new operating level.
On a whim, I attended an event that taught me to bring my spiritual team into my work. From then on, everything changed. Instead of overthinking and doubting myself, I learned to quiet my thoughts, tune in, ask for guidance and take action.
If I could start over, I would call on my spiritual team from day one. I wouldn’t doubt my abilities or look for answers in coaches or courses. Instead, I would build a support team of people to help me integrate my inner guidance. Nobody knows what’s best for me better than me, and nobody knows what’s best for you better than you!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey there, I’m Laura Langfitt – spiritual business coach and marketing expert. I help soulpreneurs step out of broke healer energy and build the business of their dreams. Each one of us has a unique magic within. We reach our highest potential when we awaken that energy and weave it into every part of our lives (and businesses).
Now, Unbridled Biz was born out of a search for freedom. I had done life “right” – college, marriage, fancy corporate job, house in the burbs – but deep in my bones, I knew I was meant for more than driving up and down a highway and sitting in a cubicle. Can you relate?
I took the terrifying leap away from “normal” and left my soul-sucking corporate job behind. I told the Universe I wanted more – that I wouldn’t settle for a life that didn’t have me leaping out of bed with excitement each morning. Today I’m doing the work I was born to do. And let me tell you, getting to help spiritual entrepreneurs chase their dreams is pure magic.
I guide my clients to awaken to their life force energy and live in that magic as much as possible. People don’t care what you’ve studied or how much you know. They care about how you are living each day.
When you live within your magic (not just drop into it for a client session here or there), you become a living, breathing example of the change you want to see in the world. Then we do the “boring stuff,” like marketing and sales, but we sprinkle each individual’s magic on top every step of the way.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My first holiday season in my biz was a mess. Looking back, I was just getting started, but as it unfolded, I felt like I was going down. I left my corporate gig in March and hustled all summer to replace my income. And I did it! But the problem was, I did it by taking on any and every client that came my way, and I was wayyy undercharging.
My clients were void of magic (think tech companies and insurance agencies), and I had bought a one-way ticket to burnout town. The universe must have seen the trainwreck coming because it stepped in to help, but I couldn’t see what was happening at the time.
I had just landed my biggest client ever, and they were paying me $1,000 a month for all sorts of content creation. Of course, I should have been charging 5x that, but hey, I was on cloud nine.
My family was in town for the week, I’d worked my butt off to be able to take a few days off, and I was ready for the holiday! Instead, I woke up Thanksgiving morning to an email from the client’s husband saying they were ending our relationship because of an image I used on their social media.
I was hurt, confused, and super hard on myself. Turns out, the client only wanted airbrushed, fake images for their brand (after she went on and on about how authentic she is during our intake meeting). And, of course, she didn’t even look at the content before approving it.
I was so crushed, angry, and too ashamed to tell my family what was going on. Thanksgiving went by with a fake smile and a ton of internal distress. I kept thinking, “at this rate I’ll be back on the job market by Christmas.”
But I didn’t give up, and just two weeks later, I manifested the perfect client that was less work for more money and turned into a beautiful long-term relationship. That first Thanksgiving was a huge lesson in releasing control. What’s meant for you will stay, what’s not will go, and if you can learn to relax into that reality running a business is much easier!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I was raised to work hard, do whatever it takes to succeed, and avoid risk at all costs. Failure meant you did something wrong. But, as you probably know, that’s not how entrepreneurship works at all.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that failure is just part of the game. You gotta be willing to fail big if you want to make it big. So I dove into failing forward, and it started to work.
Unfortunately, The better it worked, the more I had to lose. I was building a reputation as a darn good marketer, and before I knew it, I was all wrapped up in preserving that reputation at all costs. My fear of public failure became REAL. What would people think if my marketing efforts flopped?
I wasted a whole year putting out perfect, safe, and rather pointless marketing efforts. I wouldn’t say they flopped, but they didn’t change the world by any means.
The thing about entrepreneurship is that even if you are the expert of all experts, you gotta be willing to take risks. We’re not following a playbook. We’re creating our own as we go. And sometimes, we gotta throw caution to the wind and dare to be on the cutting edge (while risking failure) in pursuit of changing the world.
I’m not here to build a reputation as a great marketer. I’m here to help people create the lives they only dare to dream of – to teach them to bless others with their powerful inner magic – to let parts of us that society has told us are wrong, too much, or not enough, and let them free.
If I have to fail 1000 times to reach that goal, I’ll try again 1001.
