We recently connected with Laura Kummerle and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
With the consistent content I was putting online while working full time in the physical therapy clinic treating patients, I had two other business reach out regarding contract work they needed within 2 weeks of each other. Both of these opportunities were things I could not say no to, and this was the defining moment when I realized I had to reduce my hours treating in the clinic to continue be able to grow my own business. Since then, I have slowly reduced my hours in the clinic to continue to be able to expand my services and programs offered.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Laura Kummerle and I’m a physical therapist by trade. I have had the passion for movement from a young age. After retiring from gymnastics, I continued to work out, but felt like something was missing…that was until I stumbled across calisthenics. I found my passion again with including more bodyweight training, improved my confidence, and I decided to share my journey online as seeing calisthenics online, gave me a new direction. As I went through physical therapy school, got my Doctor of Physical Therapy, and continued on to working in the clinic while doing a residency program and eventually getting my Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Certification, I continued to share workouts combining bodyweight training, skills, lifting, mobility, and more while educating others on movement. I now offer workout programs and consult calls to help people move better and reach their goals so they can continue to do things they love. I’m passionate about sharing how movement can improve the quality of life, from reducing the risk of injury to improving how you’re moving to allow you to spend more time with family and friends in different ways.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think consistently showing up and keeping an open mind is very helpful in succeeding. Keeping an open mind and continuously learning will allow you to grow, but consistently showing up gives you reps and gives you something to learn from. You’re never going to feel like you’re ready and you’re never going to be perfect, but that’s okay!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I had to go back, I would still choose to be a physical therapist specializing in orthopedics. The knowledge that it has given me about the human body has allowed me to do what I do now. I always strive to do the best I can at what I do. Even coming out of physical therapy school, I wanted to learn more, which is why I chose to do an orthopedic residency program. This gave me the confidence and understanding to be able to educate and help others they way I can now.
