We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Kendrick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
The most unexpected problem I ever faced? Hating my job from day one. And that’s saying something, considering I’ve always been a word nerd. My high school heroes were Sam Seaborn and Toby Ziegler from The West Wing. Yep, I was that kid.
Naturally, copywriting felt like the perfect fit. I mean, I love writing. I’m obsessed with the sheer power of words. And buyer psychology? That’s my version of a beach read—can’t get enough of it. Plus, I was good at it. So why did I hate it?
Every time I wrapped a project, I’d be left thinking, “How can something I’m so passionate about feel this awful?” I’d poured so much time and money into honing my craft, only to find myself questioning if I’d made a colossal mistake.
Weeks, sometimes months, would go by between clients because I’d have to psych myself up just to write another sales page. Three years of this, and I was stuck in a love-hate relationship with my work. Then one day, I wanted to join a friend’s group coaching program but couldn’t justify the cost. So, I asked if she was down to work in trade.
That was the game-changer. Turns out, I didn’t hate my job—I was just working with the wrong people. The moment I found the right client, it was like flipping a switch. I fell head over heels for what I do, and suddenly, the future looked brighter than I ever imagined.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a copywriter and founder of Cheeky Copy, who’s all about bringing intense clarity to the complicated world of marketing. My journey into this industry started with a deep fascination for storytelling and the psychology behind why we buy. What I’ve learned along the way is that successful selling isn’t just about pushing products—it’s about a genuine exchange of value between the buyer and seller, where both parties walk away better for it.
I specialize in what I like to call “human funnels.” Instead of following the usual cookie-cutter sales tactics, I focus on creating authentic, value-driven connections that resonate on a human level. My services include crafting UX copy, designing launch strategies, and offering VIP strategy days, all aimed at helping entrepreneurs dive deep into their marketing cycle to meet their crush clients where they are and walk them to their offers with humor and humanity.
The clients I work with often feel overwhelmed, stuck, or like they’re shouting into the void without being truly heard. They’ve tried the DIY approach, invested in copy courses, but still feel like their messaging isn’t hitting the mark. I help them cut through the noise, find their authentic voice, and create messaging that not only converts but also feels true to who they are.
What sets me apart is my ability to simplify the complex. My clients don’t just get copy—they get clarity, confidence, and launch copy that reflects their true voice and the value they bring to the table.
I’m most proud of the transformative relationships I’ve built with my clients. When we work together, it’s not just about making sales—it’s about creating something meaningful that connects with the right people. If you’re looking for a partner who gets you, who can turn your chaos into clarity, and who will help you create copy that truly resonates, then we’re going to get along just fine.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Honestly, it’s pretty simple: be yourself and genuinely give a sh*t about your crush clients. I know, it sounds almost too straightforward, but here’s the thing—people can tell when you’re being real, and they can definitely tell when you care.
I’ve built my business by focusing on authentic connections. It’s not about using the flashiest tactics or following some cookie-cutter formula; it’s about showing up as my true self and treating my clients like the unique, amazing individuals they are. I take the time to understand their struggles, their goals, and their vision, and then I help them find their true voice and communicate it clearly.
When you care deeply about the people you’re serving, it shows in your work. Clients feel that connection, and that’s what keeps them coming back. It’s not just about closing a deal; it’s about creating a partnership where both of us bring value to the table. That’s the kind of relationship that turns clients into raving fans—and that’s the real magic behind growing my cache of crush clients.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative? Hands down, it’s the freedom to meet my clients exactly where they are. I’m not bound by rigid curriculums or cookie-cutter frameworks. Instead, I get to tailor my approach to each client’s unique needs, goals, and quirks.
There’s something incredibly fulfilling about being able to throw out the rulebook and craft a strategy that feels right for the person in front of me. It’s not about forcing anyone into a one-size-fits-all solution; it’s about creating something that truly resonates with who they are and where they want to go. That freedom to adapt, pivot, and create without constraints is what keeps the work fresh, exciting, and ultimately rewarding for both me and my clients.
