We were lucky to catch up with Laura Katz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
My defining moment was when I was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago. At first, I was going to keep it quiet and then a friend asked me what I was going to do when I had to go to work bald. From that point, I decided on full disclosure and realized that I had to stay alive for my family and my patients. I also realized that my own part in self-advocating really helped save my life, multiple times. I began doing talks and lectures about this. Also, I realized how short life is and decided to go for it in everything I do. I wrote books, did new experiences, met new people, etc. I am still going strong now!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Actually, I started off planning to go to music school. I wanted to be a symphony musician, but then i realized how often do those jobs open up? Usually it’s only when someone moves or dies. So, I went to regular college instead and planned to go to medical school. I decided on obgyn because I realized on rotation that the variety was endless…and I cried at the delivery of my first baby…lol. Over the years I practiced full service obgyn, until my cancer. That year I was able to realize that my body was not the same anymore and I could not do the all nighters. I evolved into comprehensive and minimally invasive gynecology. I use the Davinci robot. I use the Acessa procedure for fibroids and many other tools. I have developed a protocol where 98% of my patients go home the same day! I have also branched into aesthetics in the last 7 years and offer laser hair removal, morpheus8, aviva labiaplasty, coolsculpting, and formaV vaginal rejuvenation. We know have an additional practitioner in the office that also does fillers, threads, botox, facials, etc. I have become very big in speaking my mind and self-advocation and become more active on social media. I want people to know the amazing care that I and my staff give. I want patient to know how we care completely and compassionately. We take pride in our brands Laura A. Katz MD PC and Monroe Comprehensive Laser Center.
Any advice for managing a team?
This is an excellent question. I have recently become my own office manager and turned over the billing process in the last few months and we are doing awesome! I have worked on being a leader, not necessarily a boss. I targeted all the things that were wrong which i didn’t realize were wrong until they weren’t anymore! I learned very quickly about how to efficiently run an office and manage all the employees and their thoughts and emotions. We all take input from each other. We behave like a family. I value everything they say. I engage them regularly in all decisions, including hiring. I make sure that we all complement each other on jobs well done. Everyone is helpful and happy and can’t wait to get to work every day. We even have a who was helpful drawing that employees submit their teammates name into and there is a monthly drawing. We have it good!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think my whole story is about resilience. There is the financial hardship. There is the cancer and working through it. So, many things. I think that me televising the shaving of my head, keeping the public updated with videos, going to work almost no matter how I felt, and teaching people how to advocate for themselves at the same time really is resilient. I think that the harder things get, the harder I try. It’s just the way I am built.
