We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Jimenez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always like to learn new things, it was during the pandemic when I was spending more time at home that I noticed there was an increase in mosquitos that year, I tried to alleviate the situation by burning candles everywhere — some citronella candles I purchased at convenience stores — but they started giving me headaches. I realized the ingredients of these candles weren’t the best and I thought to myself, ‘There has to be a better candle than this!’ This is when my learning journey for candle making started. It was never my idea to make a business but it’s what began when I started telling people I was making my own candles.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I don’t think you ever stop learning. I love making things from food to crafts and overall I’m a forever student. I immigrated to the USA 30 years ago and now I live and work in Orange, Ca. Before venturing into making candles in my free time I was focused on my full-time job of 18 years. It requires a lot discipline to hone in on craft especially while at a very demanding sales job but there are many things I learned at my day job which I was able to apply toward building this business and eased the balance of them both. What makes me most proud about making candles is returning customers, I will say it’s a very saturated industry so when I have returning customers it makes my day! Poured out of Love is true to its name, everything we offer is something I would only use myself and around my family and something you would love. Every candle is poured by hand in small batches using clean scents and coconut-soy wax. We offer a great value for safe and curated candles. My second best selling product, lotion bars, are made with locally sourced beeswax and organic oils. The most important aspect to all this is the relationship and service I provide to my customers. I really value making sure that they can find me at local markets and pop ups, hearing their stories and experiences with my products makes everything worthwhile.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
At the moment a new source of clients comes from vending at local markets and pop-ups. Being in front of my customers and seeing them face to face means a lot to me. It is here where I can get feedback on what I have brought into the world so far as well as motivation to make new products.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As far as running a business on top of your full time job, you need to be able to prioritize your time and resources. My priority is still my full time job. I have to learn how to prioritize the growth of my business around this. For now I am content with consistent growth. We can only take every day as it comes, throughout the week some days I work directly on this business but other days come and I can’t. Progress is still made during these breaks because rest is necessary and part of the journey and I know each day bring me closer to being able to dedicate myself fully to this passion. I would like to hire extra help eventually but for now I do everything myself and it takes resilience to do exactly that.
