We were lucky to catch up with Laura Hernandez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The word “Latam” in “Latam Law, LLC” stems from a couple different origins.
First, in the business world “Latam” refers to Latin America, and my business heavily serves the Latin American community.
Second, my first name and middle name are Laura Tamarah, and my mother’s name is Tamarah. So, “Latam” is a combination of my first and middle name, in addition to being a small ode to my mother.

Laura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 2005, when I was 13 years old, and experienced racism for the first time. This inspired an interest in social justice and a desire to learn about the international community. In law school I found a way to combine these interests in the form of the practice of immigration law. We assist with family-based immigration and deportation defense, and as an immigrant myself I am very familiar with the fears and stressors that my clients experience. I believe that my experiences allow me to have a unique and compassionate approach to the practice of immigration law.
I am proud to be an immigrant and proud to be able to give back to my community, and lend a reassuring hand to my clients as they go through their immigration journeys.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In July of 2023 I hit the reset button on my entire life. I got a divorce and left my job as a Senior Associate Attorney after years of hoping to become partner that never came to fruition. Even though I was terrified of starting a business and doing it by myself both personally and professionally, I learned that I can still accomplish my goals even if I do it afraid.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Initially my own experience as an immigrant helped me build rapport with clients. Since then I have done my best to always be prepared and leave no stone unturned for my cases, to treat clients with respect and understanding, and to be a zealous advocate for each and every one of my clients.
