We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura H. Rubin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura H. below.
Laura H., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
One of the most unexpected challenges I’ve encountered in my business has been dealing with the capabilities of AI. AI image generators like Midjourney can produce stunning artworks with just a few clicks, based on paintings by real artists,(without their consent). You can simply enter the artist’s name on these platforms, and the AI generates an image in that artist’s style, which, in a way, renders the original artist somewhat redundant. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against these advanced tools, but it’s clear that many no longer appreciate the effort behind weeks of painstaking work on (e.g.) realistic paintings, knowing that AI can replicate similar results in seconds. From my perspective, there’s no simple solution yet. Traditional and digital artists must rely on curators to distinguish between AI-generated images and genuine art.

Laura H., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Switzerland-based artist Laura H. Rubin is best known for her realistic drawings of strong female characters in minimalist portrait designs.
Laura discovered her love for digital art while studying film and visual effects at the SAE Institute in Zurich. After graduating, she pursued graphic design at the German Klett Academy and worked for several years as a designer in an advertising agency in Bern before deciding to start her own business with her art.
In partnership with publishers based in Paris, England, and Switzerland Laura has released a number of art and educational books.
She has also collaborated with some of the most prominent names in the film, gaming, and publishing industries, such as Disney, Ubisoft, Square Enix, and Simon & Schuster.
In 2020 and 2021 her work Apophis was the key visual for the STROKE one of the biggest art fairs in Germany.
Her work has been exhibited in cities such as San Francisco, Munich, Zurich, Paris, Basel, and Milan.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the freedom to always be oneself. In many industries, the moment you step into your workplace, you’re expected to cease being yourself in order to work as efficiently as possible. You’re supposed to appear happy, look your best, be friendly, accommodating, and always motivated. But that’s not how humans operate, leading to spending half of one’s life pretending to be someone they’re not. However, the art industry is different. You can be who you are and show that to others through your work.

Have you ever had to pivot?
For a long time, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after school, so I followed the career paths suggested to us during our education. I began with a training program in the construction industry as a painter and plasterer. After that, I worked as a stylist and later as a tailor. However, I didn’t really enjoy these jobs; they were merely a means to earn money. It became clear to me that I needed to find my own path and stop following the suggestions of career advisors. With various side jobs, I saved up money and eventually studied film and visual effects in Zurich. This decision set everything in motion; almost automatically, I found the path that suited me best and made me happy.
