We recently connected with Laura Gutowski and have shared our conversation below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I found organizing very early on in life. Let’s just say my mother isn’t the most organized of people (hopefully she doesn’t read this article!), so I had to figure out how to create organizational systems that would work for us. By the age of ten, I was already helping friends and family to organize too. Birthday presents and gifts for the holidays – by popular demand – often consisted of free vouchers to help declutter closets, organize photos or arrange home offices.
Since then, I have lived and worked all around the world. From tiny apartments in Hong Kong to flats in London with no closets (just wardrobes!) to homes across America, I have helped people organize and make their spaces welcoming and beautiful. I had been organizing on the side for many years, but in 2019 decided to take the plunge, form Everything In Its Space, and become a full-time professional organizer. And I love it! It is hugely satisfying and rewarding to see how transforming and empowering this experience can be for my clients.
Because life can be chaotic! We’ve all felt overwhelmed by the competing priorities of work, family, and relationships. No wonder that we often struggle to declutter our homes. At the end of busy weeks and weekends, actually organizing your closet and bringing those bags of clothes to be donated can feel daunting.
I strongly believe that your home should not be yet another thing that overwhelms you! Instead, it should be a respite from the daily stresses and demands of life. To make sure your home is all that and more, I offer advice, encouragement, and guidance through the process of decluttering and organizing your space in a way that works best for you and can be easily maintained and enjoyed. You will feel like you have more time and more control! You may even re-discover things you love! And nothing makes me happier than seeing that weight lifted off the shoulders of my clients!
Each experience with Everything In Its Space is different, tailored especially for you and your home organization needs. But whether you’re looking to organize your closet, kitchen, office, or the whole home, my team and I can definitely help!
We also offer moving support, because while moving can be an overwhelming process, it can also be the perfect time to get organized. Perhaps you want to declutter before a move to avoid paying shipping for things you’ll never use, or to help your old home look better before sale. Or perhaps you need help unpacking or setting up your new home in the right way so you can feel settled sooner. Either way, Everything In Its Space is here to make your moving experience as smooth as possible.
Our final service, and the one closest to our hearts, is bereavement support. When we lose those closest to us, determining what to do with their possessions can feel like an impossible task. Everything In Its Space will be a shoulder you can lean on, helping you ensure their memories stay alive while their belongings find the right new home.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
At the start of the pandemic, I was living in London, where a full lockdown was enforced. I couldn’t go to my clients’ homes to help them organize, so I went from being super busy to having zero income almost overnight. Luckily, I was a member of industry associations like APDO and NAPO and could use their forums to talk to other professional organizers and see what they were doing; that opened the door to virtual organizing for me, which for many months was all that I was able to offer. I’m glad that I was able to at least provide that support to my clients during the worst of the pandemic, but am very glad that we’re back to hands-on, in-person sessions now!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Before founding Everything In Its Space, I was an investment banker, management consultant and corporate director. Growth and profitability were always paramount. But professional organizing is a deeply personal business, and service is the most important thing. Sometimes I have to turn down big projects that aren’t the right fit (for example if someone is being pushed to hire me but just isn’t ready yet), and saying no to those paychecks is not an easy thing for someone with my background to do! However, making sure that we truly help every single one of our clients is what has allowed Everything In Its Space to build its reputation. I am incredibly proud that we are an award-winning business, recognized for the service levels we provide to clients, and have never gotten anything other than a five-star review on any channel.
