We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Gorman . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope to be remembered as someone who loved people, and was passionate about how looking good on the outside could positively impact the way someone feels on the inside. The most moving thing a client ever said to me after I’d done her makeup for the first time was “thank you for sharing your gift”. I’d love for that to be part of my legacy. Kindness and compassion are also incredibly important to me, just because they’re everything- they’re healing, they’re magic, and just like artistry they possess beauty and a unique ability to make someone feel.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I would definitely have to say that both my career as a makeup artist, and the journey of being a business owner, developed in a progression that felt very natural. It all unfolded pretty organically, if that makes sense. I took a leap of faith and just went for it. It’s been the most incredible ride.
For me, makeup and all things beauty has been a lifelong passion. I’ve been obsessed for as long as I can remember.
I officially began my career as a professional makeup artist nearly 14 years ago, during which time I was fortunate enough to work for iconic brands such as Lancôme, the Estée Lauder Companies, Benefit Cosmetics, & Stila. As a regional traveling pro artist, I had the incredible opportunity to apprentice under both Nationally, and Internationally known artists. Like pinch me, seriously!! It literally felt like a dream, and still does. I’m beyond grateful and thankful for all of the incredible mentors I’ve had. Their belief in me has meant everything.
I think that I’m most proud of our diversity, and the span of our reach. I absolutely love that our clientele ranges from as young as 15, to individuals in their 70’s. Their trust means the world to us, and we love that they feel comfortable, and how excited they get when they see the finished product. I also love that they often tell us how much fun they had. Beauty products, hairstyling, and makeup artistry should be fun. I love seeing our clients radiate joy from the inside out.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
At the end of 2022, I did experience a private health crisis that became publicized. Because the nature of my health crisis centered around my mental health, I knew the image of my brand would be affected. One Instagram user commented that I “ was nothing like the brand image i projected”. I decided rather quickly that I was going to forgo this ideal of perfection, and instead be authentic in my experience, and transparent about my journey. My hope is that at least in part by sharing my experiences, others will feel safe in sharing theirs. I truly believe that positive progress in any aspect of life begins with raising awareness, and establishing a supportive environment that we can all learn and grow from. ✨❤️✨

How did you build your audience on social media?
I feel that engagement on social media, at its best, gives your audience a glimpse of who you are, what your business stands for, and what values your brand represents. It’s really important to me that our posts and content are authentic. People recognize authenticity, and they do respond to it. It’s about connecting with people.
I’ve always done things “outside the box”. I’m at my creative and personal best when I’m unconventionally, unapologetically me. And I’m okay with being occasionally misunderstood. I think that’s where growth happens honestly.
I’ve always told colleagues and fellow creatives not to worry about how much they’re posting, but instead to post content they love & are excited to share. People definitely know when you’re being real with them. My best advice is definitely don’t overthink it, and more than anything, have fun with it! ✨❤️✨
