We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Gisborne a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
What’s different about Limitless Women is that we are a philanthropy first organization. We host business training fundraisers and our private sector clients all donate the first 20% of their consulting fees to charity as a part of our partnership agreement.
Limitless Women is a community of leaders who are talented, creative, high-achieving innovators and thinkers, and who are committed to growing profitable businesses to empower our dreams and goals, and also to contribute to our families, communities and the world.
To date, we’ve collectively raised over $700,000 for charities that support women and children, and our donations continue to help heal poverty across 5 continents.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My childhood was pretty tough by American standards. There was always a roof over my head and I had enough fresh water and food, but my family was in a constant state of violence. The lack of nurturing and guidance I received informed so much of the way I moved in the world as I grew into an adult. Even me trying to be a good student was centered in wanting to become “worthy,” and maybe stop the pain.
In my 20’s, I married into a loving family who had a whole different way of being, as well as a successful company. That relationship gave me a huge education in running a business, and at the same time I uncovered so much about myself and my vision for what I wanted to create. My entrepreneurial journey began and I moved from the restaurant industry to real estate to building a wine business that gave birth to another business, and it went on from there.
Eventually I got to a place where I truly had everything I could imagine from my home to my family and my life, but there was still a part of me that wanted to give back. I’d been helped and led by so many people who “saw” me before I could see myself … who taught me that it didn’t have to be so hard, that things could be different. And the business I do today is all about taking the blessings I received over my 30 years of experience and paying them forward to empower other women leaders.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had been managing spinal issues for 10 years. It all started with sharp pains in the bottom of my feet and was accelerated after a severe car accident the day after Christmas 2020. Initially, I took the “Band-Aid approach” where you do the minimum to keep moving forward even though there’s struggle and pain with each step.
Then one day my doctor sat me down with a reality check and told me I could lose the use of my legs if my bones kept slipping. There was no clear timetable … it could happen tomorrow or in 15 years, but it was definitely down the road if I didn’t make a change. That’s when I knew I needed to disconnect to reconnect.
I went to prayer. The guidance I received was that it was important for me to allow myself to be supported and to commit to healing. I went gently into a series of surgeries, and after 3 months of walking in faith and trusting the system, I came out on the other side in a whole new way both physically and mentally. It was a period of huge growth and understanding for me. As I moved out of a decade of physical pain, my faith was deepened and I gained a new awareness of how much magic can happen in a precious period of time.
As a bonus I didn’t foresee, once I stepped back fully into my business afterwards, I started to see a significant connection between my healing and the transformations I’ve been present to with my own clients, which is a perspective I’m really grateful for.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My work centers around programs that teach women business leaders the systems and strategies to grow their success. As much as we focus on specific tactics and models, at the core of all of it is my awareness of the deep trust that it takes for a woman to allow herself to be supported while growing her business.
Limitless Women is a community of remarkable women business leaders who are committed to success specifically so they can give back to their families, and the world at large. What we’ve learned as we’ve built this community is that it’s all about staying in the energy of being of service, which then attracts the people you’re meant to serve.
For instance, one time I had the opportunity to speak with a television producer. Before we got off the call, I asked if there was something she needed in her business that I might be able to offer support with. She laughed incredulously, “No one has ever asked that before. Everyone wants something from me.”
We talked about what projects she had going on, and in the end I was able to share some resources that both solved some of her issues, and fostered a deeper connection between the two of us.
As we’ve started to build momentum with Limitless Women, and my Legacy Leaders Global mentorship program, we’re realizing our capacity to reach women globally because we know that giving causes growing.
