We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Currens a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear stories from your time in school/training/etc.
I graduated with my doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2009. Have so many special memories with my classmates during our program, watching each other’s movements, practicing techniques on each other, and working in the cadaver lab! Most of the program we were in sports bras and shorts practicing on each other! It was an intense 3 years but was so amazing learning so much detail about the body, nerves, muscles, fascia, and how joints move.
Laura, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a physical therapist for almost 14 years and started my pelvic health practice in May 2022, Dynamic Flow Physical Therapy in Ventura, CA! We specialize in pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, low back pain, hip pain, abdominal pain, bowel issues, urinary and bowel frequency/urgency/leakage, and pelvic organ prolapse. I was burnt out working in a standard PT office where I did ortho and pelvic health. I had started a pelvic health program at my old job but didn’t feel like I was giving all I could to my patients, or truly getting people back to their goals/resolving their issues. It was a terrifying transition starting my business since I was coming from a stable job and then picked up home health physical therapy as I was building my practice which I had never done before. I’m so proud to offer quality, one-on-one patient care, where we truly can help people recover from pelvic health concerns, pregnancy and postpartum issues, and reach goals! There is so much that we can offer to help with optimal health and wellness as physical therapists and we can’t do it with restrictions in standard clinics. My goal was to create a clinic where we can treat our patients holistically, addressing head-to-toe issues, and bridging the gap back to full athletics/sports. We also have built a list of caring, passionate providers to refer our patients to, which we believe can be the key to full recovery especially for complex cases. Pelvic health can be really complex and sometimes we need a team of practitioners to get long-lasting results we are after!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I feel our success has been due to offering high quality treatments which are focused on our patients individual goals! We are outcome focused and educate our patients on what to expect, the process to their goals, and what we need to do to get there. I find this helps with a patient’s commitment to their healing and giving them hope that they can overcome frustrating and embarrassing symptoms. Many of our patients have had years of symptoms, many medical appointments, testing, prior physical therapy, and limited answers/outcomes. Having ample time to listen and understand the whole picture and completing a thorough evaluation, helps us understand the root cause of the symptoms. Once we have an idea of the source of pain/issue we can come up with a plan of attack, to overcome these symptoms!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I hired a business coach at the beginning of the year which was the best decision I could have made. Wish I would have done it sooner! Joining my mastermind has been so valuable to learn how to be a business owner. We don’t learn this in PT school and truthfully most PT’s we just want to help everyone and treat, not do accounting, numbers, and financials. Having a mentor to guide me, learn from, and a system to organize the business has been beyond important. We also have a community of pelvic health PT’s from all over the country in the group, daily chats, and so much support from others who are in a similar stage of business. I’m so grateful to continue to grow, feel confident, and learn how to balance being a mom/business owner/PT, and just having others to talk to! Organizing the business and building my confidence has been key to growth so we can continue to help as many people overcome pelvic health concerns as possible which is our company mission.
