We recently connected with Laura Clark and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
That photographers just point and shoot. There are mechanical and technical aspects to using a DSLR or a Mirrorless camera that go into getting a good shot.
This is something as a photographer that I get quite a bit. There are also aspects of photography that go into the cost beyond the “point and click” that people think we do. There is a way we shoot our shots to make sure that we get the best shot for each pose. Composition, editing, knowing our equipment and using it in the proper context with lighting and understanding how to pose shots and get the most genuine aspects of our clients story.
The thing that gets wrong is that the photography industry is over priced for just picking up and “point and click”. They do not take into consideration the creativity and time behind the knowledge of our equipment and our field.

Laura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Laura Clark and I am a photographer. I got started in photography when I was 17 as a junior in high school and took a photography class at my high school where I learned aspects of film (35 mm/”old school”) and digital aspects of photography. This is where my initial spark happened with the industry.
It was a hobby from here on out, and then I had an opportunity to buy a used DSLR Nikon 3200 from a friend of mine and was able to learn the camera by trial and error. I mainly started doing landscapes and wildlife. I slowly started to get into doing small events after college for friends of mine.
During the COVID shutdown I stumbled across a mentorship program to get better in technical aspects and gain confidence in my abilities. This allowed me to explore different aspects and niches of photography and decide where I wanted to grow a potential business and where I wanted my focus to be.
This is where I started a website, and in 2022 with the support of my husband I decided to start an LLC in my state for my photography and have very slowly (almost agonizingly so) I have been making progress in growing my business as a photographer and owner of a business and learning what that entails.
I am most proud of the progress I have made in learning everything that I can in all aspects and learning where my strengths are. I have landed on doing family / senior portraits, couples, engagements, and weddings. But also do landscapes and wildlife for fun and have the option to purchase prints of that through my website.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Creating memories of moments for my clients that will last a lifetime. I have had the opportunity of being involved of a couple of weddings. It is rewarding to be a part of a big moment in a couples life and providing them with a service that will allow them to look at those photos in the future and remember the love and happiness captured throughout that day.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For me I’ve had some luck with social media, but most of my success comes from people I know hiring me or a referral from a fellow photographer. Knowing people close to you will benefit you and allow you to be able to expand from there and taking any experience to get your name out there more.
