We were lucky to catch up with Laura Cheung Wolf recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve been immersed in the world of decorative arts for as long as I can remember. Creativity runs deep in my heritage—both sides of my family have been devoted to decorative arts for three generations. My grandmother specialised in cloisonné, the imperial art of bronze enameling, and one of the rare merchants entrusted to share these treasures beyond China’s borders, bringing them to Hong Kong and introducing the world to their brilliance. On my father’s side, the legacy continued through the creation of exquisite rosewood furniture, crafted with time-honored precision and care.
Growing up in this richly textured world of craftsmanship, it felt only natural to continue the narrative in my own voice. Founding LALA CURIO was my way of reimagining this heritage—merging reverence for the past with a modern spirit. It brings me immense joy to create pieces that honor artistry while inviting a sense of wonder into the everyday.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
LALA CURIO is my way of weaving imagination into the fabric of tradition. It’s a couture wallpaper and home décor brand where ancient craftsmanship meets a playful, modern spirit. I see it as a chapter to the decorative arts—especially Chinoiserie—reinterpreted for today’s interiors with reverence, curiosity, and a sense of wonder. My goal has always been to revive traditional artisanship and make it not only relevant, but irresistible in contemporary living.
My journey into this world began with a childhood steeped in cultural richness—I was born in Sydney, raised between Hong Kong and England, and surrounded by a family heritage of decorative arts. I studied interior design at Parsons School of Design in New York and went on to earn my Master’s in Fine and Decorative Arts from the Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. My career began in the world of fashion event production, but it was my passion for heritage crafts that ultimately led me on a two-year journey across Asia, uncovering forgotten techniques and inspiring the foundation of LALA CURIO. Established in Hong Kong, the brand is a love letter to the artistry of the past—told with deep respect, curiosity, and a flair for storytelling.
LALA CURIO offers couture wallpaper and bespoke décor rooted in exceptional craftsmanship and designed to elevate interiors with imaginative sophistication. Our work reinterprets centuries-old techniques—such as hand-painted Chinoiserie and embroidery—through a fresh, contemporary lens. What sets us apart is our innovative approach to tradition. We honour the artistry of the past while introducing bold colorways, unexpected motifs, and a spirit of playful refinement. Our clients—designers, collectors, and tastemakers—seek pieces that are as artful as they are unique, and that bring a sense of wonder to their spaces

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My first career was in fashion event production, where I had the privilege of working with iconic names such as Tom Ford, Estée Lauder, Vogue, and MoMA. It was an extraordinary immersion into the world of high fashion—an education in storytelling, spectacle, and the power of immersive experiences.
Yet even amidst the glamour, I knew I wanted to pivot and channel that creative energy into interiors and carry forward my family’s legacy in craftsmanship, but with a vision uniquely my own. That shift led to the founding of LALA CURIO, where I now approach wallpaper and décor through a fashion lens, emphasizing detail, drama, and artisanal excellence.
Today, I work with artisans trained by couture houses to create embroidered wallpapers that are as intricate and expressive as a hand-sewn gown. It’s a convergence of two worlds—fashion and interiors—that continues to shape the identity of the brand.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative mission is to revive traditional decorative arts and reintroduce them to a contemporary audience. With deep roots in a family legacy of craftsmanship, I’ve had the privilege of learning from artisans whose techniques span generations. Through LALA CURIO, I aim to share their artistry in a fresh, relevant way—ensuring these time-honored crafts continue to inspire and evolve for the future.
