We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Cardona a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents taught me that humble beginnings are valuable beginnings. Both my parents are Colombian immigrants who displayed a work ethic of righteousness and excellence their whole lives. They taught me to set high standards for myself, be diligent and patient in getting to my next goal, and above all to always be truthful, kind, and to stay strong in my faith. I grew up in Connecticut where the winters can be harsh and unforgiving. When we first came to this country my parents did not have the economic means to buy a car nor had either one of them ever driven a car. At 36 with no English my mother found herself in a predominantly white town. She barely knew anyone, felt lost, doubted herself, and was in need of a job. In the meantime, my father worked at restaurant bussing tables. Overtime he raised enough money to buy a little used two door car after they both took driving lessons. My mother obtained a job as a housekeeper and rarely missed a day. They never looked back. Snow, icy conditions, car or no car they embraced the change, the many challenges that came with the territory, and they just kept moving forward even though it was so hard at times. In my eyes they kept an attitude of gratitude and resilience. Looking back at all the hurdles they had to overcome, beginning a new life in a foreign country, and having to learn so many new skills has inspired me on many levels. Their sacrifices fill me with courage to take risks, to seek new opportunities, and to always remember that God is with me on the climb.

Laura, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Licensed massage therapist, certified aromatherapist, and owner of Poetic Energy Corp. I became interested in pursuing aromatherapy after seeing how effective it was for my five year old daughter at the time. She was seeing a behavioral specialist due to how serious her tantrums were. When I discovered an essential oil that helped soothe her while helping her open up and verbalize her feelings I wanted to know more about this modality. I proceeded to obtained a certification in Aromatherapy, a diploma in professional clinical massage therapy, and hold a Florida board license in therapeutic massage. Today I provide mobile massage and aromatherapy services for those with high levels of stress resulting in muscular pain, limited range of motion and poor quality of sleep. I aim to support my clients by combining both modalities through a series of customized sessions. In these sessions we primarily focus on soothing the central nervous system in order to calm an overactive mind. Some light breathwork is done in an effort to move out stagnant air from the lungs helping circulate fresh oxygen throughout the body. A pain assessment is completed to see where the pain is radiating to and from. As we proceed into the massage we incorporate gentle and appropriate stretching where the client may be experiencing muscle tension.
Should a client want an aromatherapy blend customized to support their needs and medical conditions we will sit down and do a medical history intake to ensure we take into account allergies, present discomforts, aroma preference and goals. I can put together an array of supportive products such as, personal inhalers, diffuser blends, topical application products, bath salts, massage oil blends etc… However ready to go blends will soon be available as well.
I want to help people be free from stagnant energy within their body, strengthen the mind-body connection, and provide them with holistic support so that they may discover and operate in their own unique poetic energy.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back and choose the same profession I absolutely would. When someone invites me to take part in their wellness journey it is an absolute honor and privilege for me. I love to be able to hold a safe and sacred space for my clients. To see my clients progress, strive towards their goals, and achieve them is such a great feeling.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Something that I believe is most helpful for succeeding in my field is community and mentorship. Continuous learning from others who specialize in different areas helps to bring awareness to things you perhaps have never thought of before. It helps so much to listen and get different perspectives on various strategies and topics. Everyone has their own unique touch and energy and so learning from that can really make a positive difference in your practice.
