Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear a story from back when you were an intern or apprentice. What’s a memorable story you can share with us?
When I started my career over 20 years ago, I first became the owners assistant at a salon. I was the only assistant in that salon for a couple of months. There was many talented hairstylist that work there. They were all very open with me anytime they were going to do any projects on a client where they wanted to share a technique, tips or tricks. They were all so kind to teaching me and take me under their wing. They knew I was so new to this industry and coming out of cosmetology school. All you know is what they teach you by the book not real life, incidence or trials and errors that you were going to make so I learned a lot from them I’m so thankful that I was able to be in an environment that they were all so willing to help me start my career and teach me things that I would’ve never learned in school. Throughout my career and even now till this day after being in this industry for so many years, I still look at how people work and how they do things and I ask questions and I’m still so curious, I have came across so many talented artist that will share their things that they have learned as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up looking at magazines watching MTV music videos and when my mom got her hair done I just love the smell of the salon as a little girl I didn’t know what it was called. All I wanted was to work somewhere that it smelled like hair products, and to work behind the scenes for magazine photo shoots, and Music Video’s. I love to see peoples talented work, and I love to collaborate with people that also love their craft. I stay active in my career by constantly networking, with people, reaching out, messaging them. It’s so fun being in this industry because I get to work on so many different projects. The one thing that I have taken from peoples advice is don’t be scared to try. you’re never going to know if you like it or not unless you try. some projects I’ve been scared to take on because I don’t think I’m talented enough or I know enough, or I don’t even know how to do the job that they’re asking for but I take it on I try I remember everything that I have learned from so many people and I do it and I end up loving it and that’s how I have been able to learn and still continue to grow in my career. I’m so blessed that I have clients that have been with me and have followed me for over 18 years. I appreciate and adore the time that I spend in the salon with regular clients and new clients. I also love freelancing and trying new avenues in this industry. I’m constantly working on weddings and photo shoots for clothing and makeup brands. I enjoy my job so much not just because it’s so fun but because I get to meet and talk to so many different people.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my business partner 13 years ago. We both were working on a fashion show together. She was doing make up and I was doing hair for the models. I joked around with her and said we got to collaborate we have to get famous! It was funny until she messaged me wanting to collaborate, I was very excited because it was my very first shoot. We worked well together and since then we work all our bridal parties together all our photo shoots are together, and any other projects that come across we go as a team. Since then we have been able to meet other artists that we work with, and create so many fun projects with. We get to collaborate in many different locations and travel together and network.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have been blessed to work with so many talented people but unfortunately you come across people that pull you down or keep you from moving up in your career. I always try to collaborate with people, I love learning, staying curious and appreciate people’s work ethic, but I’ve definitely have made it very important to stay around uplifting positive people that will build you up that will want to grow with you. Because I was giving the opportunity to be guided and be taken under people’s wings to teach me. I try to do the same when I see someone starting their career or wanting to learn I try to be an open book and share as many things, as I possibly can to help support in anyway, that I can.
