We recently connected with LAURA BROWN and have shared our conversation below.
Hi LAURA, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
My client was a 70-year-old retiree who had harbored a dream of transforming a story he often told into an illustrated children’s book. Although he loved storytelling and had support from loved ones, self-doubt, fear of failure, and lack of technical/technology skills held him back. That is until he met me, a writing and publishing coach with a passion for helping people fulfill their publishing dreams and the patience to match my passion.
Our journey began with a simple conversation. Mr. Thomas shared his aspiration to publish his story to leave a legacy for his grandchildren. His eyes sparkled with a mix of excitement and trepidation as he confided in me, confessing that the task seemed daunting at his age. I reassured him that age is just a number and that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
I patiently helped Mr. Thomas organize his thoughts, structure his narrative, and improve his writing. We went through the ups and downs of writing together, celebrating the little wins and overcoming challenges. I supported him by giving regular feedback, motivation, and technical assistance to help him stay on track and keep his progress going.
As weeks turned into months, I witnessed Mr. Thomas’s transformation from hesitant to expectant. After connecting him with a local illustrator, his story took shape. With each step, his self-belief grew stronger, and his passion for his project grew.
Finally, the day arrived when Mr. Thomas held a printed copy of his book in his hands—a tangible testament to his perseverance and courage. Tears welled up in his eyes as he flipped through the pages, marveling at the illustrations and seeing his story immortalized in print. All doubts and insecurities melted away in that moment, replaced by a profound sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. He now desires to add coloring pages to his book, so it is still a work in progress until the illustrator completes her part.
For Mr. Thomas, writing his first book was not just a personal achievement but a profound revelation of his ability to overcome doubt. He discovered that age is no barrier to creativity and that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams. His book will become a cherished gift to his family, a legacy that will endure for generations to come. He is now considering writing a memoir.
As a publishing coach, witnessing Mr. Thomas’ transformation was a poignant reminder of the power of belief, perseverance, and unwavering support. I not only helped him achieve his dream, but also strengthened my commitment to empowering others.
Mr. Thomas’s journey is a testament to the fact that anyone can overcome their doubts and fears with proper support and guidance to achieve the extraordinary. His story continues to inspire me, reminding me of the profound difference we can make in the lives of others by believing in their dreams and helping them turn them into reality.
LAURA, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my journey as a publishing coach after trying for several years to write a book. I realized that it would take accountability, so I started a small group composed of a few others with the same dream. During this time, I discovered a passion for guiding aspiring authors through the complex process of getting their work published. This led me to offer coaching services to help writers navigate the publishing world and achieve their goals.
As a publishing coach, I offer a variety of products and services, such as feedback on manuscripts, guidance on self-publishing, and insights into the industry. I also offer personalized one-on-one coaching sessions to address each client’s specific needs and goals.
One of the key problems I solve for my clients is demystifying the publishing process. Many writers feel overwhelmed or intimidated by the publishing industry, and I provide them with the knowledge and support they need to succeed. I assist authors with improving their writing skills, building their audience, and understanding the publishing industry.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is my personalized approach and dedication to each client’s success. I take the time to understand their unique goals, challenges, and strengths and tailor my coaching to meet their individual needs. I also stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices to provide the most relevant and valuable guidance to my clients.
I am most proud of the success stories of my clients who have published their work and fulfilled their writing dreams. Knowing that I have played a part in their journey to becoming published authors is incredibly rewarding.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that I am committed to helping writers at all stages of their journey, whether they are just starting out or are seasoned authors looking to elevate their careers. I’ve built my brand on a foundation of expertise, professionalism, and genuine care for my clients’ success. I am here to empower writers to achieve their publishing goals and realize their full potential as authors.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’ve established myself as a trusted writing and publishing coach by demonstrating a deep understanding of writing techniques and publishing processes. I consistently deliver high-quality coaching services and stay true to my values and mission by effectively communicating with clients, providing constructive feedback, and offering necessary support in the way the client needs it. When working with clients, I model professionalism in all aspects of my coaching practice, including responsiveness, timeliness, and integrity. My track record of helping clients achieve their publishing goals is known throughout the city.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Early in my coaching career, I once had a client who had a unique approach to her writing craft. She believed that dividing her poetry pages into separate files, with each page as its own individual piece, would allow her to focus more intensely on each poem.
When she came to my home for her coaching session, she explained her unconventional method and her desire to create a seamless and engaging book out of these separate pieces. She and I realized that pulling together 115 files into a cohesive manuscript was going to be a monumental task.
Her session started at noon, and I showed her how to merge files.
As the hours passed, I made dinner for my family and noted the sun setting through my dining room window. At this moment, I seriously reconsidered my commitment to coaching. I told myself this was the last time I would do this type of work. It was discouraging because I felt I had failed her by not telling her in previous sessions not to do it that way or at least instructing her on best practices for drafting content. I assumed she understood the basic principles of document creation.
Finally, as my grandfather clock struck midnight, we placed the last file in its rightful place, completing the puzzle that was Eliza’s book. Exhausted but elated, we took a moment to revel in our accomplishments. The once disconnected files were now safely nestled into one document, and her poems could tell the cohesive story as she intended.
With a sense of pride and fulfillment, Eliza thanked me for my unwavering patience and support (not to mention snacks and dinner) throughout the long day. I had to remind myself that I was not at fault and that there was no way I could have anticipated her actions. As I bid her goodnight, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to help her. This also reaffirmed my commitment to continue coaching because I knew there were more Elizas out there who needed help.
