We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Belmonte. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Things felt stagnant here, in the Swamp. Jake and I decided to seize an opportunity to write songs and music in a fresh new location. It was a risk we were willing to take for Lost In Clovers. I call it the ‘pilgrimage to the Blue Ridge Mountains’ ; we lived and breathed the ‘Appalachian emo’ air in Roanoke, VA. We packed up everything, left everyone we knew and the Music scene we were apart of. Drove 7ish hours west with the hope of finding something new in ourselves. For the time spent in a new place I filled up a whole journal with my experiences. Jake and I created Venus of the Swamp E.P , Tales of a Chesapeake Lighthouse E.P, Truth about Sasquatch and Ego Death. We are really proud of the depths we went to in these sounds. We have since moved back to the Swamp, things cannot stay stagnant forever..

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
‘Lost In Clovers’ is an aspiring small town band from Maryland , we are unique sound for someone who is craving something new. Good dreamy-experimental dark-ethereal pop! This is always a really hard question for me to answer, about myself to others. I get super inner reflective. I always ask my live audience during a show to please comment afterwards what they felt or what genre we invoke in them. I love to connect with anyone who has ever read Sylvia Plath, sings along to Fiona Apple. Came from a small town and/or Maryland! (Laura giggles) My music is honest and open, my lyrics are murky dream scapes of stories that I have lived. To quote Meredith Brooks song (Nothing in between) the chorus “I am I am I am ” all of those things.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As an unsigned musician getting booked for shows sometimes seems daunting and is nearly impossible. During the beginning we started out with contact emails to venues. Being persistent, every venue from the Eastern Shore to Western Maryland was getting a naive ‘hello’ from Lost In Clovers along with a demo of our original sound. We had our first live show opening at a Haunted Theatre in our home town of Havre de Grace in January of 2021. Since then it has been really important to make acquaintances in the music scene; reach out to other Artists in the community; IG has been helpful finding bands to put a DIY set list together. My favorite show we have played was at Ottobar! We even got ourselves into a Battle of the Bands at Jammin Java! It is rewarding when you get booked and you did it all on your own. Maybe one day we will have a manager and all that unknown. I’ll have a different outlook possibly. Right now though. Resilience is getting my Art out there. My advice to any creatives reading , “Don’t give up!”

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Winning NPRs Tiny Desk Contest! I am a huge fan and supporter of NPR, I always have my record player/radio tuned in. The Opera and Gregorian chanting are amazing listening. This is our third time entering the contest. We chose our original song Snowball. A melodic Noir-Ballad semi-warped daydream of broken promises in a small town. Highlighting the Musical Saw during a solo, the saw sounds like the cries of two people bellowing back and forth in eery harmony. It would be a dream to be acknowledged to a larger audience as Independent Artists! The live take of ‘Snowball’ is on our YouTube page. Wish us Luck!
