We recently connected with Laura Arguello and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
In 2018, when I was thinking about returning to work after a career break, I realised that I was lacking something. I was feeling out of date, lacked purpose and confidence, and was stuck because I didn’t know how to start taking action. I knew I wanted to do something for myself and my family but I was not sure where to start. Talking to mums at school, playdates, and playgrounds, I realised I was not alone, and those were common feelings that many of us were sharing. I started thinking about how to help those mums, and myself, and here we are with Between Mums.
My mission is to support mums returning to work after a career break or parental leave to find a new purpose in their careers and to upskill and reskill to unlock their potential. I want to help them to feel empowered to go back to the workforce either in roles according to their skill set getting the wages they deserve or building their businesses. I want to support them to take action on their future selves so they can shine and achieve a fulfilled professional life while they raise their children.
This is also important because some of these mums, including myself, have returned to work to jobs below their skill set with lower wages than before they became mums, which only makes the gender pay gap even bigger.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started Between Mums with the support of my husband, Don. We have two amazing kids aged 10 and 7. We’ve been through the whirlwind of changes that having children brings into a family’s life. Our mission is simple: we want to support mums on their journey of rediscovering their career path after taking time off for their little ones. We’re here to help mums shine bright again, to encourage them to focus on themselves and what truly ignites their passion for what comes next in their life.
We are here for mums:
Ready to relaunch their career after a break, but without knowing where to start
That want to find a new purpose in their professional life after being a mum
That feel it is time to shine doing something they enjoy while getting paid for it
We have set up a mindset online programme filled with tools and advice from top coaches to face the challenge of getting unstuck, believe in themselves, and feel empowered to move towards their goals with confidence aside from their unique role of being a mum. The Between Mums online programme is FREE, is made up of three 15 to 20 minutes videos delivered by certified coaches and workbooks that support the lessons, and they can expect to meet like-minded mums within our community and the expert sessions that will follow up the course. The programme can be accessed here: https://betweenmums.thinkific.com/courses/let-your-light-shine.
We’ve been also working on something special: the Mum’s Academy platform, with a couple of courses in the pipeline. We’re very excited to announce that a course designed to help them excel in interviews will be one of the first resources available on the platform.
Aside from these resources, we also have a purposematch quiz on our website to find amazing options to support their plans of returning to work or changing career.
We are constantly updating our Instagram account with live sessions, personal stories of other mums to get inspired and focused, and invaluable advice from career and life coaches.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A couple of years ago, we decided to move back to the UK after starting a family abroad. It implied changing our life and starting again with two little kids. We had to pivot our life and our jobs, and find new opportunities. The journey has had ups and downs, and it has been challenging many times. It has tested us as a couple, our strength as a family and has made us more resilient and resourceful. Looking back, we have learnt many valuable lessons that we have been able to apply to our ventures, including Between Mums.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my husband in 2007 in Madrid, Spain. We quickly realised we shared a passion for entrepreneurship, and we have worked together in different projects, some more successful than others. Our learning curve is endless as partners and as co-founders, and we have always been driven by ideas with purpose and with meaning in our life and how we can impact the life of others through our best efforts.
