We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Laura Alessio a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Yes, my parents instilled a strong work ethic in me which helped remind me to persist during times of struggle. They supported me during challenges and encouraged me to keep going and never give up. When I didn’t pass my board exam the first time they still believed in me. When I got fired from a job without being provided any reason they reminded me sometimes these things happen and to just keep going. They have provided unconditional love and support throughout my lifelong journey.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My experience as a devoted practitioner of yoga and meditation for the past 20 years complements my professional expertise. As a certified yoga teacher, I integrate holistic practices into my coaching, emphasizing the importance of mental and physical well-being. My mission is to empower individuals on their journey to achieve optimum health and well-being through compassionate nursing care, evidence-based coaching, guidance, and support. I aim to inspire sustainable lifestyle changes by providing personalized coaching and holistic education that fosters self-discovery and promotes physical, mental, and emotional wellness. I also recently started a Functional Medicine for Nurses course and will be incorporating that specialty knowledge into my coaching services as well.
Do you think you’d choose the same profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Yes, absolutely, there are so many directions one can take with a nursing degree the opportunities are endless. I didn’t know about that many options when I graduated in 2010, but even in the last few years I have learned about so many more roles and positions that nurses can pursue.
I really wish that I had learned about Nurse Coaching a long time ago, but I truly believe in the power of the Universe and the timing of when we meet certain people and learn about new potential directions our lives can take us. I started my Legal Nurse Consulting business in August of 2021, but it wasn’t until June 2023 when I met a Nurse Coach (at a Med/Legal conference) and learned about all things Nurse Coaching. I’ve now opened my own Health and Wellness Nurse Coaching private practice and am so excited to see where this journey will take me.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Lived experiences are priceless. Wherever you are at in your journey, in any field really, I feel that trying to get as much exposure as possible is irreplaceable. In order to succeed in your field I highly recommend trying to volunteer, intern, shadow, etc. someone who is doing what you are interested in so that you can get hands-on experience to see if it truly is what you want to do.
When I started considering going into nursing, I began volunteering at a local hospital in a variety of units including mother/baby, PACU, and then ultimately the ER. While in the ER I was literally able to see everything I was learning about in school, and as a visual learner this experience was incredibly helpful for me. Being able to witness a variety of injuries/illnesses/diseases first hand was invaluable as it allowed me to reinforce all the material taught in class and read in the textbooks.
