Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Latrina Piper. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Latrina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
They say when you know something is just for you, then you know. I have always been intrigued with the medical field. I originally wanted to be a general surgeon but after having kids that has went out of the picture, ha! One of the best moment of schooling for me was when I was in the Medical assistant program for about a year. It was a difficult time for me, with having given birth a few months prior to that and all of the other issues I was facing at that time. I ended up doing my externship at a pediatric office, that is to this day my kids doctor. It was frightening at first, you know, but once I started to get a hang of what I was doing it, I loved it!! I am pleased with my decision to finally follow my heart and pursue my career in the medical field. Now to further my title into a virtual medical assistant.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Of course!! The healthcare industry has always and will always be intriguing to me. There is something about helping someone sick or educating a patient that makes my adrenaline just flow through me. What I would do differently, would be to invest more into myself and to study more. You can never go wrong when you invest in yourself.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
In this field that I love so much, I think being compassionate with empathy will help go along in this corporation as well as being stern when needed. When you are able to relate to what the patient is feeling and not pass judgement, will get you far in this industry. Often, patient will not see a provider or give a nurse their complete medical history due to embarrassment or even shame etc. That is where your personality should shine. Having good side bed manners is also a great characteristic to retain.
