We recently connected with LaTressa Moses and have shared our conversation below.
Hi LaTressa , thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
One of the most innovative things I’ve done to date is publish my first book. I started on it in 2016, writing notes here and there. At the time, I was working in the Behavioral and Mental Health field as a Case Manager. I worked with kids, teens, and adults who were experiencing various issues. Sometimes, I would often reflect on my clients situations and wished that I could do more—especially for the kids and adolescents because at that age they didn’t understand life and lack the tools to properly work through their problems. I wanted them to have something lasting—beyond me that they could refer to when they found themselves in a pickle. Furthermore, I continued to create my notes and it was some time before I realized that what I was writing would one day become an entire book.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am LaTressa Moses, coach, mentor, and author of It Starts as a Child: A Personal Development Guidebook for Teens. I’ve been helping children and teens throughout my career in a variety of settings, including my non-profit. I am the founder of S.T.E.M. 101, Inc, a youth-serving 501 c3 organization in which I work with teenagers by creating learning opportunities through mentorship, workshops, and trainings to teach them skills necessary for their growth and success in life. I reside in Georgia and continues to lend my life to my personal vision for the youth in my community and surrounding communities.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Sometimes, the beginning stages of a thing might not take off right away. It may take years before your vision becomes a reality. You might fail a few times before you finally get it right. This has been the story of my life. For many years, I’ve worked and continued to push towards my goals. It has been plenty of times that I’ve wanted to give up on some of my goals because it has been hard work in more ways than some even imagine. I continue to invest in myself because I know the “why” is greater than “how” I feel at times. Seeing the growth and the impact that I’m making serves as a reminder that we have to keep showing up and doing the work because eventually everything does falls into place at the right time.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn is the need for anyone’s approval.. Feeling the need for validation will have you confused because people will not always see your vision nor understand it because some things are not intended for everyone. As long as God approves that’s the only thing that matters and that you need to move forward.
