We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Latrell Caton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Latrell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
My craziest story in recent times has to be the success of a photoshoot that I thought was going to be terrible. As much as I shoot, any photographer would tell you when they have a gut feeling about a shoot. I was asked to help conduct a photoshoot for a stylist named Jordyn Clark for an event entitled the Met Gala where our 46th Annual Mr.Howard, Rashan Schoffner, was celebrating his birthday. Jordyn created and designed this elegant red dress that I know had to be photographed by me. On top of this was her pairing of the dress with the Jordan 1 OG Top 3s. We arrived to our location for the shoot, the historic Howard University Yard. As it was 10pm on a Friday during Bison Week, we knew our timing was not the best as underclassmen were partying on the Yard. Our shoot didn’t start off great and majority of the fault was in my hands. The light I was using started malfunctioning before we even began and my alternative was not giving the results I wanted. Despite the setback, I took a couple minutes to reset, didn’t rush, and fixed the light. My goal was to get the photos done and posted the same night regardless of the time. It was the idea of how Jordyn made this dress and I wanted to workout my creative urge. The results from the fix were totally different, so much different it caught the attention of the Jordan Brand. As we posted at 1am, within 48 hours of the photos going live on our pages, we were communicated by the Jordan Brand to have our photos used for marketing material. Our photos were used for not only the Instagram, but the Twitter, SNKRS APP and Jordan website. The opportunity to have my art posted on a brand I looked up to as a child was a moment I will never forget. The community and my peers recognized the quality and imagination that went into the shoot, and I am so blessed to have a family around me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect to me is the memories and moments I get to make and help create with others that gets to be documented through my lens. From capturing my high school graduation, to rooftop pool parties in Miami, I have been grateful to work in all types of environments that add onto the experiences of being a young adult.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Honestly in years to come, just like Bitcoin, just like Netflix, I believe we all will be wishing to own a couple of valuable assets. I want to one day of course create my own NFT but I want to have a marketplace for fine-art photography that allows users to invest into an artist just like we can invest into companies.
