We recently connected with LaToya Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
LaToya , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
It started as an idea many years ago. I always knew I wanted to become an author, but it didn’t become clear until 2020 the year of the pandemic. I was a single mother of a two year old son and I knew I wanted to touch the lives of other single mothers like myself. Because let’s be honest single parenting is HARD! So I knew I had to come up with a concept that would offer single mothers some insight and wisdom. I had the idea to create a self help book that would offer them “steps” that could make single parenting easier. The summer of 2020 I simply started writing. I created an outline of what I wanted the book to include. Next, I teamed up with an amazing visual artist and editor who would ultimately help me bring my words to life. January 2021 I took professional pictures that would help bring my vision to life even more. My saying is I’m a product of my product. I wanted to show mothers that you can be a successful single mother regardless of the negative comments from society. July 2022 the book was released!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
During the process of my book being written and edited, I decided to brand myself and started a Facebook group called Single Moms Living On Purpose. The groups purpose was to foster a community of single mothers looking for inspiration, encouragement, and general support. I started growing the group with women that I knew and it continued to grow. I eventually started an IG page as well. The last piece of the puzzle was my website. The website highlights my story, who I am, and my vision for other single mothers. The website is www.smlop.com
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As a single mother, you rarely get breaks. You rarely get the opportunity to just be. I had to learn how to put myself first, so that I could then be everything my son needed. I realized I wasn’t going to allow my circumstance to dictate how I saw myself. I’m still worthy of all things amazing!!!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time when I had to pivot in life was going from being a 31 year old childless woman to a 32 year old mother. That was a major shift in my life. I wasn’t easy, but absolutely worth it.
