We were lucky to catch up with LaToya Perry recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi LaToya, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

When I was a little girl I have always wanted to be a fashion designer. I wanted to make my own clothes and clothes for my friends. As I got older things shifted. I never pursued being a fashion designer but I began to design earrings.

I realized that I was still in the fashion industry I just make earrings instead of clothes. I am able to make custom earrings to match my customers outfits and that some brings me so much joy!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I always knew I would be an entrepreneur. It’s in my blood line. I come from a family of entrepreneurs from contractors, chefs, bakers, creatives, doctors, nurses, and etc. My grandpa was a Preacher but he also had workers that he picked up on the weekends to work in the field!

It took me a few tries at this entrepreneur stuff but I finally figured it out. I started out as a cosmetologist, then I was a tax preparer (still do this for a select few), then I owned a plus size boutique for women, then I helped people fix their credit (this became stressful so I pivoted into something else.

I began coaching other small business owners with their businesses which I truly enjoy doing. Once I got my coaching business doing great I started back focusing on what I wanted to do for myself.

I started making candles and melts which turned into me making home decor pieces and now earrings.

I love making earrings I get to be creative and it’s relaxing! If I could I would just sit and make earrings all day. When I provide a unique pair of earrings to my customers it brings me joy to see that I was apart of making them feel even more beautiful than they did before.

Wearing my earrings provides a new sense of confidence for my ladies. When you add them to your outfit of the day you know you can conquer anything that arises!

Not only do my earrings boost your confidence but they allow you to be comfortable with yourself. Comfortable enough to go out and change the world!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Being an entrepreneur I had to unlearn how to spend money. When I say that I mean I had to learn how to budget not just for my personal life but for my business too.

In the beginning I was just making money and spending money and had no structure when I created a strategic plan of action that’s when everything fell into place for me.

I can still make money and spend money but strategically so now I am not feeling like I am living paycheck to paycheck! We have to be responsible with the money so that it keeps flowing in!

I had to learn how to listen to GOD and follow his lead so that I could be successful. Once I started doing that everything flowed in so easily.

Have you ever had to pivot?

When I first started She Sweats she was a fitness brand! Again I thought I was supposed to be designing clothes so I was going to design a fitness line.

It started out great but then I realized that this was not what I really wanted to do. I want to be creative and use my mind and my hands to create something beautiful and something that women love.

I started making candles after that but it was really more so for me because I love candles. I sold a lot of candles and melts. I still sell them on occasions now. But something inside of me still felt incomplete so I kept going until I came across how to make earrings.

I absolutely love earrings and the more colors the better. I am vibrant and love to stand out in the crowd with my pop of colors. I started making earrings and before you know it I was happy and doing something I truly enjoyed!

Being able to do something that makes not just you happy but others as well is the real rich!
