We were lucky to catch up with Latoya Morrison recently and have shared our conversation below.
Latoya, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I started my YouTube channel September 2022. Since then, I’ve been the sole creator and editor. So yes, I do manage all the background details of my contents. This is something that I enjoy doing and am learning more and more each video. For me, creating a video to publish takes a lot of work and attention to detail. From the music selection, to the high point of your video, to the flow of the video. It all takes a great deal of knowing how to tailor my videos in a way that will pull my audience in, creating engagement with my videos.
Latoya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a YouTube Content Creator living in Los Angeles. I was born and raised in Jamaica where I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing Management before moving to the states. Since moving to the states, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the top investment firms in New York and Los Angeles.
Fast forward to now taking a break from corporate life and taking the time to stay home and raise my son, I’ve transitioned, for the time being, into earning an income passively through numerous online channels with YouTube being one of main baby at the moment.
My husband was the one who really encouraged me to start my channel. I was kind of nervous and didn’t think I had it in me to do something like that. I also didn’t think I had enough going on that people would find interesting. When I finally built myself up to starting my YouTube channel, I was blown away by the reception, people loved it. They, I guess, fell in love with my family and loved seeing the love we share with each other. Surprisingly, I received my first 1000 subscribers and got accepted into the YouTube Partner Program within a month of being on YouTube. That was a huge milestone for me and that was my main motivator to pursue creating more content and to actually make my YouTube channel a business.
What I am most proud of about my channel is that I get so many amazing comments from my subscribers on how much my videos lighten up their day. They love to see the fun my family have together and with so much going on in this world, I am blessed to share positivity, love and laughter.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I decided to start my own YouTube channel, the first thing I did was to watch ‘how to’ videos on YouTube: how to start your own channel, how to gain subscribers, what topics are people more interested in, how to earn an income through YouTube etc. I did a lot of backend research before deciding that starting a YouTube channel was something that I wanted to do. I really wanted to make sure that I had the right content that would attract subscribers. Once I decided on the type of content I would produce, I had to make sure that I stayed consistent at posting once or twice a week. Very importantly also, I always interact with my subscribers by responding to comments and interact with them through my community tab timeline. This I think have worked very well for me in showing my subscribers that I appreciate their support.
My advice for those starting your own YouTube channel is do your research first, get ideas from other YouTube channels that inspire you, see what works and what doesn’t. Pick a niche but one that you put your own spin on it and most importantly be consistent.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I am a genuine person and I think that portrays in my videos. Through comments I’ve learned that people gravitate to my channel for one, being that I am Jamaican and the love for my country shows in my videos and two, they love my in-laws and how well we all get along.
