We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Latoya Massey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Latoya below.
Latoya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My Aunt, Dale Glover, gets full credit! She was my very first client, onside of my mother. I used to watch her do perms (to us it was a Jheri curl) watching them letting their “Soul Glow” lol… she pressed with the hot comb and twirled with the Marcel Irons. She reminded me of a Magician. Seeing that made me want to try different styles with my dolls and myself as well. I really became a mini boss at 13 years old. I started rolling my hair in foam rollers from my grandmother and changed my styles once a week. I became inspired to do others hair from that point. My aunt then started to teach me the popular French Roll style with added (banana peels) and she started to pay me to do her hair every Sunday at a rate of $25. I thought I was something! Then it was up from there!!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a Dallas, TX native, born and raised. I had a passion for beauty young! My clientele began to grow very early at the age of 13 years off age…. I felt good knowing that I was making my own money and making people happy. I was so invested. Being a young mother and to be able to support my son, felt good and meant the world to me! As the years went by, I began to turn my business into a brand! I strive to push young entrepreneurs to be mini bosses and push their dreams! We push our kids everyday to be bosses and support them fully in their Artistic creativity to be big and great. Having your own business is not easy by far, but it gets easy and at the end of the day it’s something you love!!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I share my work on most outlets, which helps boost my clientele and connections. It is just something about creating art for others to see or be motivated by. It also gives me a boost to be more creative and get out of my comfort zone. TikTok allows me to express my goofy side! LOL. Facebook allows me to connect with family and friends, old and new… they help to push my business and art to others. I remember when we only had word of mouth and relying on clients…. Whew!! Let me slow down, I think I am telling my age!! LOL
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients?
I look at building relationships!! Majority of my clients has adopted me as a friend and family members. I love them with all my heart and soul. I believe that when it comes to building connections, it’s like a house….. “you have to have a strong foundation in order to have a sturdy home that will practically last a lifetime”. I stand by these words! I believe my selfless thoughts and bubbly spirit is the key!
