We recently connected with LaToya Cobbs and have shared our conversation below.
LaToya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I remember it like it was yesterday, my husband and I decided to sale a van we owned because the previous delivery company we had business slowed down. We met a guy that was interested in purchasing the van and he didn’t want to pay what we where trying to get. We went back and forth and finally came to a number we both could agree on and that lead to a conversation with him telling us he was a licensed contractor and we explained we had just started a business doing junk removal and demolition. He agreed to send jobs our way and he kept his promise. A few days later he called saying he had a garage that needed to be cleaned out and the rest is history.

LaToya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is LaToya Cobbs. I am the founder and owner of L & A Property Services located in Markham, IL. We are a junk removal and demolition company. We specialize in residential and commercial properties. We offer clean out and demolition services that give our clients the opportunity to have a fresh start. Our services allow our clients to have a more cleaner and organized space.
Some things that I would like potential customers to know about our company is we offer affordable and quality services with competitive prices. We are woman owned, We are family oriented. We hire people with disadvantaged backgrounds. We take pride in our work and teach our team to do the same, We are able to take the small jobs others won’t do and big jobs others aren’t able to accommodate.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When it comes to building an audience on social media, if you don’t take time to learn the social media platform, it can be so hard. It took many nights of me bothering my children telling them what I wanted to do and having them explain how to get there. Some days they were like mommy I will just do it and others they actually let me try. Lol After a while I was able to go back to them and show them stuff that i created and it felt amazing. My content over time just started to get better and better and now I learn something new every day. The best advice I can give anyone with starting to build their social media is to be consistent. Create a schedule and stick to the schedule. Not only will it make things easier for you but it will let your followers know what to expect from you. I would also say if you are not the best at it or need ideas on what to post or how to put it together, there is always a friend or family member that loves doing it and wouldn’t mind helping. You will be surprised if you asked how many people would be excited to help you with it.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Wow, yes our business did turn into a business because of a side hustle that we had. My husband and I talk about this all the time. We still can’t believe that a small idea of friends and family calling and asking us to pick up items they ordered for their rehabs, to help take down a kitchen or bathroom to taking loads to the dump from their demolition or clean outs that were completed would bring us where we are today. We started getting flooded with calls from others asking if we could help from there we formed L & A Property Services.
We have met a lot of cool people along the way that has allowed us to expand our business. We now have a large amount of investors we work with, small businesses and homeowners that call us all the time for assistance with projects they have going on. We have had to get over humps of not having the money to meet monthly expenses because it’s a slow month and actually getting out and completing the work ourselves because having the funds to pay staff was just not there. With growth comes so many things and being able to say we have grown and are now in a place where we are able to get the jobs done because we can meet these expenses is great!
