Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to La’Tosha Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
La’Tosha, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I had a vision for The Confident Black Girl Brunch. There were beautiful melanated women of all hues twirling, sipping champagne, celebrating, and giggling freely. I wanted a space that was exclusive to us and only for us. A space where we could let our hair down, bask in the sun and have a sisterhood celebration.
I had been wanting to have this brunch since 2020. Due to the pandemic my plans were canceled. Then again in 2021 I found that spark to create brunch, then hit a life hurdle of hospitalization, layoffs and started a journey to a new career.
I had reached out to The Wigwam for additional information and it fizzled out because of life. One day, Ashley from The Wigwam called me and we spoke and I said “well let me come take a look at the space” and the next day I met with her on location at the Trellis Gardens and it was everything I saw in my vision! I was so inspired but it was like whispers from the Universe “You can do this” and so I made a post in TCBG group and told them tickets would go on sale the next day. I had 45 days until brunch. I made a goal of 75 ticket sales and we hit 60! I was so proud.
I had never curated an event so essentially, I learned everything as I went. Setting up my website to support that traffic, hired the DJ same day, finding sponsors for items needed, setting tickets sales, understanding, the fees associated with the event etc. We definitely learned some valuable lessons and some that cost us money.
What we learned definitely helped us grow. We always aim to fail fast so we can learn and recover. We are excited to announce from this experience we have moved from an annual brunch to a bi-annual event that will take place in the Spring and Fall yearly. The next brunch is Oct 2022. Tickets will go on sale August 2022.
La’Tosha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am La’Tosha Davis The Confident Black Girl and The Confident Realtor. The Confident Black Girl helps women repair, restore and rebuild their confidence in any area of their life that needs some TLC. We have seen women increase their salaries by $90k through our coaching, leave abusive relationships, relocate to new cities, build new healthy relationships, build their businesses and attract more clientele etc. Wherever our ladies need us we fill in the gap offering support, attainable goals, action plans that make sense, are easy to follow and create the results they need to win. As a realtor, I represent my clients in all of their real estate transactions. We list your home and sell it quickly, get you into your new home fast and efficiently. I am also mentoring other agents on the business and being the voice of truth and transparency of what it takes to get started in this business.
We currently hold a happy hour every third Friday of the month. We have Brunch twice a year, once in the spring and then the fall. We have TCBG pool party, and our last event was Sip And Date on May 21st at The Urban Corner. This event we will facilitate speed dating, networking, match men and women and create a safe space to date and connect. It is a vibe you do not want to miss. I am currently building a team in real estate. So any newer agents looking for transparency, training, direct line of contact to your mentor, and just a place of inspriration, encouragement and energy focused on your success come join me!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being my authentic self! The number one thing I am proud of is branding my business as my authentic self. That means when I show up, I show up as me. A lot of people make the huge mistake of trying to perform for likes and clientele. The allure for me and my business and why my events are so successful with 70+ in attendance is because I show up as me Tosh. When you meet me, the energy is electrifying. People gravitate to me and are attracted to the chemistry because it is real, it is unique, the blueprint cannot be copied and pasted. Be you, Be honest, be transparent! I tell people often my superpower is my vulnerability and transparency. I never had a poker face so I don’t try or pretend. I deliver everything with love, with kindness and from a place of how I would want to be spoken to and what I would like to experience.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first started out, I coached under another business that I was collaborating with. This is probably to date the biggest lesson and mistake I had to recover from in my business. I started that collaboration under the understanding that I would one day coach as my own business. I made the mistake of coaching as La’Tosha Davis and not The Confident Black Girl and it cost me. I experienced hurt, discouragement andbackbiting, once I started to market and position my business the way I should have from onset.
What I tell others is get everything in writing. You can always start again but learn from my mistakes. Agreements are in place to protect you and your business. When you have to essentially start over because you did not position your business well it can andwill be painful. It was a growing pain but necessary. Since then, I have pivoted and branded my business my way, grown an authentic audience with 4k+ on IG, 6k+ on LinkedIn, 1200+ in both our FB Group and our FB Business page and it just keeps growin. My sphere of influence is growing by the day. The women who follow me are by word of mouth, and because they want to be here. They found me. Every event I am meeting 50+ new women I have never met in my life. I am grateful beyond words and appreciate and hold sacred the women who I lead into their power, restore their confidence and help them get free. I love that so much. The experience is beautiful for them as well as myself. I am humbled, grateful and so thankful to be the vessel of influence that can bring black women together in spaces exclusively for them, teach them how to pitch their businesses, show them how to collaborate, build new friendships and so much more. From one Confident Black Girl to the next, Thank You for rocking with the Girl!
