We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful LaToi Storr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with LaToi below.
LaToi, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission is to showcase living life even with mental health issues. The many times we hear people say that if you are diagnosed with a mental health issues or disease, that you are simply unable to live out loud. I find that it’s simply not true. I battled postpartum depression with the birth of my second child. After not realizing I had it I went and sought the help of a therapist who encouraged me to start a blog and use my voice. A few things came from that encouragement. One was understanding that as a new Mom learning how to navigate life with two kids that I too could be business savvy and more. Secondly I learned how to write in a way that tells the ups and downs of mental health. After postpartum I have been in and out of therapy for situational depressive moods and anxiety. Whenever I show up in business or online its not the fancy videos that captivate its the realness while being vulnerable and honest about the day, weeks, and months that lead up to whatever life’s journey takes me.
LaToi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So my community as I do not believe in followers are looking for help in the form of encouragement. Encouragement is a hard market to sell. So I find that I collaborate with clients that have tools to help them in their mental health journey. From apps on their phones that they can use in a pinch to apparatus that they can carry in their back pocket. My community are aware that I won’t simply sell them on just anything. They look to me to be a voice that has tried the items before I bring it to them.
Although I don’t see myself as a brand I realize that I am a brand. Toitimeblog is staple of those looking to shake themselves from their past mistakes and failures to do anything that they want to do. For those who don’t know me I hope that my page doesn’t come off too curated with photos and videos that highlight me as a person for popularity. I say all often that often times I am not your favorite blogger who you can come and get cookie cutter content from. I am the blogger and content creator who shares the ins and outs of things that work and don’t work just like life showcases itself.
What started off as a blog to uplift moms has opened up to all. You don’t have to be a mom to have a life that is unpredictable. I am a Self Care Queen. There isn’t anything that we do on a daily that can’t be a self care moment. I am going to encourage my community to tap into what makes them whole, happy, and content in this topsy turvy world.
I offer video content, curated content, stories, blogs, and more to enlighten and encourage
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn is that in order to be successful I had to have a large following. This goes back to my why. Am I creating content that says see me or helping someone else be seen. When I first started out companies emphasized numbers. Interesting thing as a story teller my numbers weren’t high but I had a lot of engagement. People want to be reminding that they can achieve the very things that life, their parents, thoughts, are counting them out for. Helping me make content for others helped me brand my website to be better. I was making a site that made me look good and less about helping curate content that if someone needed to find a nugget of wisdom to help them in their lowest moment they could.
So I encourage others who are in this business as I remind myself, who are you doing this for? I have been able to mesh with amazing companies who saw me not because of my numbers but because I resonated with them and the community I am building everyday.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of me being a creative is having people come to me when out and ask me how I am doing and that me being vulnerable sharing how unwell I might have been during a time helped them. I honor people’s journey while being true to my own. It makes me know that nothing I am going through is in vain. Creatively I remind myself that where I am okay being open on my journey there is another Toi that might not be. Seeing me do skits helps them see themselves and that helps me to continue doing what I do.
