We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Latiyah “Tia” Oronia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Latiyah “Tia” thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Being a parent doesn’t always allow you the luxury of self care or pampering. Whether constantly chasing around the kiddos, working, cleaning, or tending to your partner, time for yourself gets pushed aside. Having quality products that range from self care to family care allows me to incorporate things that are important for the body and mind and cater those ideas to the whole family.
Latiyah “Tia”, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hiii! I’m Latiyah, Tía for short. I have multiple hats, some of them include stay-at-home Mom, Wicked Wonder Works Owner, and Mom the Builder. I sell handmade products that make you feel completely relaxed in just a few steps (I know our me time is limited) whether it be handmade soap for a quick shower and/or a candle to help you relax while cleaning. Your self care matters no matter how long you’re able to get.
I’m proud of the results my small business have gotten for my soaps and candles. It makes me feel accomplished when someone tells me that my soaps help them in someway or my candles are refreshing.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
My business almost died. I had an opportunity for job making great money. I mean money that would have my family living comfortably. I almost took it but decided that this was my calling. To help others. People who are in my shoes and find it hard to relax.
I feel like it’s easier to go down the route that’s kinda already set up for you. Most people take this route because they are in need of a quick solution. Helping overtired/overwhelmed people find some type of relaxation makes me most happy.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I manufacture my own products. I started making candles at first, as a hobby. It was my get away from work and my time alone at the time. Soon after, I had another baby and wasn’t able to do anything. I noticed that this pregnancy was worse than the last, preeclampsia and high blood pressure on top of postpartum depression. My daughter was a handful. I had little time for my first child let alone myself. I started doing research on soaps, bath salts, colloidal oatmeal, certain scents, etc; things for self care. I knew this was my calling to help others.
