Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Latina Lewis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Latina , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea to start Kinsman Point Consulting is one that I’ve had for quite some time. Ever since I started working within training and development back around 1997-1998 I’ve been trying to determine how I could be in business for myself. I did one very small freelance job for a co-worker in the early 2000s and at the time I didn’t call it a project management job that’s exactly what it was. I really enjoyed helping a small staff implement a new workflow to help them become more efficient in the office.
A few years later a great friend of mine kept encouraging me to start a business because he would listen to me talk about work and how much I enjoyed what I did. When I finally decided to move towards that the first thing I did was hire a coach to help me establish myself as and authority in Project Management on social media. That same good friend introduced me to another friend of his that was looking for a program/project manager to help her navigate the various requests for work she was getting. That meeting has turned into a very positive business relationship that continues to this day.
I believe being a project manager solves a huge problem for small, medium, and larger businesses. Very often projects can’t get off the ground because they don’t have someone dedicated to the organization and execution of that project’s goals. A PMs job is the help that team or business implement an initiative, product or process that will ultimately affect their bottom line. Project Management is everywhere – in every industry, not just the tech industry. I not only what to be a project manager, I want to help others become Project managers as a long-term goal.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I own and operation two separate businesses Kinsman Point Consulting which was established in September of 2021 and Travel Wellness which was established in November 2022. Here is a business summary for both.
Kinsman Point Consulting LLC – Project Manager Consultant
This firm offers project management services to businesses of all sizes. I am a certified Project Management Professional as of November 2020. I have worked in the project management space since 2010.
I manage both Agile and Waterfall projects and possess a range of expertise including stakeholder engagement, risk management, and project scope definition. I am well-versed in a variety of project management tools such as Microsoft Project, Asana, and Zoho, and you’re capable of adapting quickly to any software that your client prefers to use.
I mainly provide services remotely, but I am also available to work in person upon request. My approach to any business is thoroughly understanding the clients’ businesses, recommending effective project plans, and guiding them to successful completion. I emphasize the importance of clear milestones, deadlines, and stakeholder identification. I am not just concerned with project completion, but I also ensure that the project’s outcomes align with the clients’ expectations.
My ultimate aim is to understand and meet my clients’ project management needs, effectively moving them from their current state to their envisioned future state.
Travel Wellness LLC – Travel Advisor
My business specializes in all-inclusive travel for busy professionals, entrepreneurs, and small to medium-sized business owners. My goal is to make travel planning seamless and less time-consuming, offering services such as travel advising and planning for both short and long trips globally, including flight and hotel accommodations, cruises, and custom trips for individuals or groups.
My service delivery is mostly remote, utilizing digital platforms for communication and planning, with occasional in-person interactions. I see travel as a wellness tool, providing individuals a refreshing break from their busy routines, which can rejuvenate them for their work or entrepreneurial endeavors.
What sets me apart is my belief in the rejuvenating power of travel and my commitment to a detailed-oriented service that caters to the specific needs of each traveler, whether they are first-time travelers or seasoned ones. I bring a multifaceted approach to understanding and meeting my client’s needs, ensuring a personalized and well-planned experience for them.
My primary audience is busy professionals and entrepreneurs, along with small to medium businesses with travel needs for their staff, and my ultimate aim is to become the go-to travel advisor for such clientele.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The one book I would recommend every business owner read is Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. The book details a system of sorting your money in such a way that you consider profit as a percentage of your income from the beginning rather than after all of your expenses are paid. it shows you how to come up with the right percentages for your business so that you can account for profit, operating expenses, owners, distribution and taxes. He uses his personal story of his business to help you understand the concept. I started this process for my business and it has been a great money management tool.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
At the time of this writing, I am STILL working my 9-5 while running both of my businesses. I have a goal to leave my employment within 1 years’ time and I have been leveraging both to get me in a better position as a business owner. Because I am 100% remote on my job (which I have been since before Covid), it has given me the freedom to work this way. I have a completely separate set up for my businesses (computer, monitors etc.). My 9-5 is flexible with unlimited PTO and I take that time when I need to focus on just my businesses.
I have been able to eliminate consumer debt and I am currently looking at my options for health care as I make my transition out of my 9-5 employment. It’s has taken a significant amount of planning to keep everything organized. I anticipate I will need to leave my 9-5 very soon out of need as I take on more responsibility and scale up my businesses.
