We were lucky to catch up with Latia Nelson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Latia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
The wedding industry is tough. Anyone will tell you that. For that reason you’d think we’d all have a little more grace with each other in this industry. A lot of what I see especially in smaller wedding eco-systems is a weird hierarchy system that discourages newer vendors coming into the industry or vendors of color. You see this a lot in smaller cities with a lot of market saturation. If these systems change it would not only bring in a lot of revenue to these local markets, but weddings would be less stressful if there was more community and trust between vendors. The market would become stronger also.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My company is Marry Me Event Production & Design. I founded my company back in 2022 in Savannah. I’ve always been in creative industries my entire life including event production, television and film, so hopping into this industry was a breeze for the most part. I actually started off as a marriage proposal planner, and weddings just fell into my lap, and I’ve been consistently planning , designing, and coordinating them for the last three years in the Savannah market. Recently I’ve shifted markets, and I’m now a destination wedding planner in the Dominican Republic and St. Bart’s and I’m really exciting about that transition as it allows me more flexibility, travel time, and an easier wedding planning experience for my clients. I have an MBA and over 10 years of experience as an entrepreneur so I value creativity, communication, team work, and flexibility. These core values allow me to bring my clients the best wedding planning experience so it’s been very refreshing aligning with vendors in my new market that have the same values.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I pride myself on being a professional. It’s what I was taught in grad school. As a leader you must display confidence, competence, and rigor at all times. As a wedding planner I have to wear multiple hats, the biggest being sales. Because the wedding planning sales cycle is longer than most sales cycles, effectively and confidently guiding clients through each phase of the sales cycle is the key to growing clientele. My competency and customer service throughout the sales cycle enhances their wedding planning experience and increases word of mouth recommendations allowing me to continue to grow my clientele.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth. I have been blessed with great clients and their families who value and appreciate my work.
